hi there good to see your looking at getting a terrano/mav , i personally would get a 2.7 tdi version (like mine)as when we were looking to get one, haven driven both would avoid the petrol one disliked it a lot ,but each to there own , i find the tdi easier to tune up etc and also have no chain or belt to worry about

why is the 2.7 a gear driven engine then?
what puts you off the petrol?

Yep driven from a big fat cog on the end of the crank...no chains or belts in sight.
Not sure what the setup is on the petrol though...
But then again a good chain is almost as good - To*ota guarantee their timing chains for 200k miles...

believe the 2.4 petrol is 12 valve, makes 125 bhp, the early td was 100 'til intercooled
matched petrols 125 but buckets more torque.
several have tried tuning petrol to no avail, though will take gas conversion.
welcome btw.

I had a 2.4 petrol and have a 2.7 TDi (so the later intercooled model) now. I'd say there's not much in it between then on the road, the petrol is definitely quicker up to 60 or so mainly due to fewer gear changes cos it will rev a lot further, 1st is actually a gear in the pertols not just something to get you moving with.
Diesel probably has it cruising on the motorway as the extra low down torque means you can hang onto the gears and not change down on the hills as much, not that either are bad for that but I travel over the M62 occasionally.
Petrol uses a bit more fuel but diesel is more expensive anyway so theres not a lot in that.
Offroad again theres not a lot in it, you just need to use a lower gear in the petrol at times, but I found the pick up useful at times, non of this waiting for a turbo to spool, instant power.
Whatever you buy, prices are well down at the moment, an early model with rectangular lights should be under £1k unless very late and vvgc and a later model with twin round lights shouldn't be much over £1500 again unless very late and vvgc.

rusty cills and rear seat belt mounts in arches
noisy gearbox.
Everything else is usually pretty straightforward

is there any particular time the gearbox would give known noises?

Listen for a rumbling when stationary that disappears when the clutch is depressed, also when driving listen for a rumbling when cruising with light throttle, this normally goes in 4th but will be present in all other gears. This will indicate if the input shaft bearings are gone, which is not uncommon in earlier Terranos/Mavs

right ok also when i drove it the cluctch seemed snappy im guessing this is a cable clutch(i forgot to check)as apposed to my hydraulic one?
i found it needed front pads radiator was weeping slightly and a spare nothing really?

No it’s a hydraulic clutch, pretty reliable as clutches go.
