New 4x4 tyre law

I've just got off the phone to a couple of 4x4 tyre suppliers.

I'm looking for 2 33x12.5x15 General Grabber AT2's for spares for our impending trip to Morocco and have been told there is none in the country :eek:

Apparently there is a new 4x4 tyre law being introduced in the UK and all manufacturers are holding back with production until they know what's happening.

I have 4 BFG all terrain's fitted and wanted 2 cheaper spares hence going for the Generals..... there are only 9 BFGs available in the country so I've had to fork out £300 for something I'll hopefully never use :doh:doh:doh

Anyone know the score with this new law that is in the pipeline :nenau

not anting to sound like a 'stick in the mud' but some mud tyres are rediculously loud! I have amate who uses some monster simex things and his landy sounds like a track laying vehicle! When you are out in the country you can hear some coming litterally from a mile away and they make more noise than the engine! So mabe in some cases there is a point to be made.

Maybe it is time for more intelligent tyre design to make better gripping yres, wihtout all the noise?

I think it's a good idea to improve muds to be quieter, but dont legislate for it:(

makeitfit, I doubt the tractor does 10k miles a year at 60mph on the roads as most vehilces fitted with mud tyres seem to do! I tink that is the problem here the amount of 4x4 oners who have 'all the gear and no idea' and use big mud reads all the time because it looks good rather than because they need them!

The other issue here are i suppose fuel economy and the environment, I jsut changed the tyres on my wifes suuki grnd vitara and went for Yokohama GO 12 at-2 tyres as they are supposed to be (and so far it seems true) a little better than BFG's and one of the big advantages i have found is less road niose and less stoes and other debris showering the road and under the car when you drive back onto the tarmac, but they are esxpensive.

I dont think legislation is a good thing either, but i am all for a bit of peace and quiet! The police and air ambulance do regular traning flights over our land and even at low altitudes make less noise than some of the 4x4's traveling at excessive speeds on the nearby b road! im all for a bit of fun but surely there is no need for all the noise? and dont even get me started on motorbikes ;)

I live in rural Wales and rural Oxfordshire and sometimes rural France and if I've ever heard a vehicle with noisy mud tyres its never registered thats what it was....so I clearly can't have been bothered.

This has got to be up there with the "standard banana bend" for crying out loud!"!!

i am suprised that this is an issue people are not aware of as it has allways been one of the conpromises of any 'off road' pattern tyres, excessive road noise versus traction off road.

Having said that though I think there would be more to be gained in reducing road trafic noise in better regulations (or enforcing existing ones) for motorbikes and car stereo sytems, and of course boy racer exhaust pipes!

The noisiest 4x4 tyres ever created must have been the good (well, maybe not so good) old Goodyear Extra grips, as fitted to Army Landies in the 70's & 80's. Used to make a lovely howl on tarmac and were not that good (alledgedly) off road.

Has anyone read the legislation - theres a post on the linked to landy form that seem to sum it up for me - this is a proposal for labelling and asking manufacturers to work towards quieter tyres etc - not a ban.

I think that seems fair, encouraging manufactureres to work towards a solution rather than punishing consumers, if only they took this approach to all things! after all we can only buy what manufacturers make and retailers sell!

i got to say i run on 31.10/50,15 mt on my mav for about 4 years now and not had a prob with them nor any more road noise then my standard road tyres

I dont thnk the nose difference is something you tend to notice yourself, I have road in my mates landy with simex tyres ad inside it seems no noisier than any other landy (and thats quite loud) but standing about 100yds from it as he goes by one the road at 60 mph and it sounds like a track laying vehicle, it used st spook on of our ponies but he has got used to it now.

I also suppose it varies on the tyre make, size, vehicle weight, tyre pressure etc.

But It is a fairly 'understood' thing the heavier the tread the greater the tyre noise

I htnk we should be more worried by this minimum pice per unit thing on alcohol! with a minimum price for a bottle of wine of £4.50 and whisky minimum at £14 a bottle! now if the cheap drinks go up to that price what price is a decent bottle going to be? I will never be able to drink enough to drown ou the noise of hem tyres :lol

I think this is total bull. i work on a farm so all our jeeps have mud terrains and my terrano has all terrain's. i can say for sure that the bloody engine noise from the tractor is louder than the road noise from the mud terrain's. boy racer's run around with 1000000000000dB exhausts but no-one says anything about that. It's just a deceitful cop-out from the goverment again giving into the ramblers. And it'll just be to try and stop the 4x4's being able to go off-road.....

well, i have my oubts abut the link between tyre noise and heart problems, maybe Bat21 is pulling our legs, but.

the question of noise from some (and i mean some) mud tyres on the road is wthout a doubt true.

change can be a scarey thing for some though, my Nan still worries about 20pence coins :lol

I think govenments legislating to encorage manufacturers to improve their products is not neccesarily a bad thing, its when they punich the consumers that have allready bought them that i object!
