North Bovey Devon. (OS ref noSX 759834.
OS Map Landranger 191 Oakhampton and North Dartmoor.

Dartmoor national park is a disappointment to l.r.drivers due to the fact that green lanes are vertualy none existent for the most part.
luckyly ,on the eastern fringes of the moor there are byways a plenty-some of which are well worth exploring.
One of the best ,which lies a couple of miles south of mortonhampstead is a two mile section of the Dartmoor Way. It boasts a hard ,rocky surface which is suitable for any lr.at any time of the year,but the deep wash outs look as though they could prove tricky during spells of wet weather .
But if you do like water,this is certainly the track to visit,for the last 200 yards of the lane join the course of the river Bovey, under a dense tree canopy, before it finaly emerges in the village of North Bovey.
The river is mainly shallow ,but it could be subject to flash floods during the torrential rainfall often experienced in this part of the world...and in such conditions it should be avoided.
While you are in the erea , you can also drive a typical Devon byway about 2 miles to the north-east ,near the village of Bridport.
And dont neglect to make a short detour to see one of Dartmoors outstanding national features of craggy topography , known as Blackingstone Rock.
The truth is , this part of the Dartmoor National park abounds with BYways ripe for the exploring if you are lucky enough to be holidaying in the erea.

THE WAYFARER WAY is one of those scenes youd expect to see on a postcard.Big views rolling landscape and mountains into the distance all around.
But this one just happens to be a terrific lr drive ,too .
It is in fact the highest public road in Wales, which reaches 1912 feet at top .
The lane - a UCR- is a fairly easy drive ,comprising gravel for most of its length,although it does traverse some very soft peat bog, where old railway sleepers have been strategically placed, But be warned some of them have become damaged over the years,so drive slowly over them ,do not go off route peat bogs will swallow you.
DAMAGING THIS EREA COULD RESULT IN ITS CLOSURE TO 4X4S.
After the summit you decend back down the valley on a well maintained tarmac road although some ereas are crumbling .one or three axle twisters will nail a freelander. :clap

OS map needed Landranger 138 Kidderminster and wyre forest.

Start your day at Hampton Loade Ferry,just to watch the might of the river Severn- the UK`s longest river-roaring by.
Then head half a mile up the lane to a byway that winds between ancient
hedgerows ,before emerging back onto the main A442 road.
Now take the Tarmac for half a mile to the east to another byway,between high,banked hedges.
After about a mile ,at its northern end,the land suddenly drops away so that you can enjoy great views back over the Severn valley to the purple hills of the distant Welsh Marches.
A couple of miles north east is the third lane ,a byway close to the village of Wooton.After a quarter of a mile of steep downhill decent, this lane is joined by a brook to the right ,which under normal conditions will do more than get your tyres wet.But the deep washout that has been carved down the lane shows that it can get a bit tricky in very wet weather,when floodwater rushes down the hill .
LRO team encountered that situation when we exploed the lane in 2007 and turned back rather than risk getting stuck.
We suggest you do the same.
the first two lanes both boast a hard surface and well trimmed hedges,and are thus suitable for any lr.
But the thierd lane is more challenging with that deep gully,some large boulders and ereas of mud and water to negotiate.

The last lane is actually my fave of all time. Its not very long and not nery well known but has enough challenges to make it enjoyable.

I hope it don't get ruined by being listed in a top 20!
