Try the manual - have to say I'm not over enthusiastic with that download - copperslip is not a lubricant, its a carrier for a copper coating to prevent siezing - use proper grease.
Anyway the picture you are after is http://lh6.ggpht.com/_hJXn-iLQfPQ/STxVlkvDG_I/AAAAAAAAD1Y/YUYWbvaz6yI/Free%20wheeling%20hubs%20explo%20diag.jpg

im doing mine today because they are not working, just going to put them in the cleaning cabinet, then fill with oil (read that in a previous post?) and see how they go then, if no good will have to fit manuals when i can afford them.

The oil thing is to free up old grease - suggest you grease them - oil will run out ultimately.

Snap rings are circlips.
Have a look at the diagram I posted.
"Brake A" should not be able to fit inside "Brake B", if they can they are worn out, it is the friction of these parts against each other that engages and dissengages the hubs. You may find if you mix the Brake rings from both sides that you can produce 2 pairs that aren't too badly worn so that you can get the hubs to work properly. Make sure that the lugs are complete on the brake rings it appears to be those that break off when they are abused.

got it now thanks for being so patient
Just a thought from me extreme
I replaced the brake rings on one side only as the other looked ok but
it broke again . I gave up and went to manuals because had no time to mess about but if I remember someone said that you need to replace both sides even if it looks ok to get it working right
I think jims terrano had the same problem
Good luck

Yes that can be the case. I had one jammed in the locked position but its the other side that makes the noise as it tries to engage all the time with everythung going in the wrong direction.
extreme-4x4
06-02-2009, 21:02
so what makes them jam?
how do you free them?
what action should be taken then? - swap brake rings a to opposite sides like you said before?
or do you gust free them and re grease ?
Terranosaurus
06-02-2009, 21:17
Mne jammed on cos the break rings were worn, they were ok to lock the hubs in but couldn't get em out. I used a soft brass drift to hammer the centre round dissengage it.
When stripping and cleaning em you need to go further than the diag above show. Theres a circlip in the main body to get out and then you can withdraw the actual locking but - thats in the download I think.
If you look at the main body part fully assembled ther should be some ramp type bits and some lugs inside em they should be roughly lined up in the unlocked position. Eay was to tell if they are locked in. Put your fingers in the splines and try to turn the main body - will also give you a good idea of why it needs greasing and why they can get hot if not lubed properly.

took them apart as per download and went a bit further to remove brake rings etc. cleaned all and greased.
the truck wobbles and pulls to the left but the left side looked good
now i can see the pics and understand
however the right side looked like it had water in it at some point and some rust the big drum with cog's in inside the auto hub didn't move as free and i could not get it to lock-unlock position when dismantled...i could with the left
to be honest i think its dead or dieing fast its back together but no better
manuals i think or try the breakers
shame all the rings etc are good its that drum that seems seized

yeah but its the cost, the mav owes me 340.00 quid and i want to get it to 0 spending out on manuals will ruin my plan for free motoring
i paid 850.00 and sold loads a bits off it so it owes me very little
not a happy bunny:thumbs
Well uhmmm
rebuild both sides and you really need to do that to make i work.
I wasted a good new hub kit because i didnt.
If you have new working against old it will break.or sieze
i wish I lived closer I would pop my old autos round so you could use them
the new kit is still ok.
Good luck
well at least you won the photo comp

still got the problem in 4wd the stearing is all ok and ive changed the auto hubs but its pulling from side to side and feels like its tripping over its front wheels..
could it be the diff oil needs changing ?
or
replace the brake rings etc on the auto hubs ?
this is all i can think it is its not like its loose its like its just swiching drive wheels really quickly and very often
come on guys throw some ideas at me
jims-terrano
09-02-2009, 20:24
I've heard in the past that old oil in the transfer box thickens at low temps. The solution to that is suposed to be replace with Synthetic. Surely can't be a bad idea to change the transfer box oil if you don't know it's history.

Are your back an front tyres all the same size? ie not different makes, or worn lower on one axle. (The same rolling radius)
extreme-4x4
09-02-2009, 21:46
yes all matching tires in size make and model,
one thing i have noticed if you take it easy up to 30mph in 4wd its not too noticeable or bad, but if you give it welly in 4wd its all over the place
jims-terrano
09-02-2009, 21:51
If you jack it up and grab the wheel top and bottom and then each side and shake is there any movement in either plane? Not sure how you would test it but what about CV joints or UJ's.

everything feels tight and good
still got the problem in 4wd....
I take it you mean off road and not on the Tarmac
extreme-4x4
09-02-2009, 22:30
both obviously im careful on tarmac, and its less noticeable off road.
but as you know its used for all sorts of jobs involving free stuff and really don't need it breaking when im "somewhere i really don't want to get it stuck"
so it has to be tip top ya know
both obviously im careful on tarmac, and its less noticeable off road.

Know what you mean - came back from Wales last night in a right blizzard; A470 over the Brecons to Merthyr was just about passable but 4WD was a must!...M4 past Bristol was also getting covered by 10pm, so another brief hard shoulder stop required...
