View Full Version : oil refinery strikes
i see it's all kicking off at the lindsey refinery, im glad they are sticking up for themselves at last.
A worker holds a protest card outside the Total Lindsey refinery, in Lincolnshire, northern England January 30, 2009. Energy workers staged unofficial walkouts on Friday when anger over the use of foreign workers at an oil refinery spread across the country. Contractors at Totals Lindsey refinery, in Lincolnshire, began a protest on Wednesday after a project to build a hydro desulphurisation unit was given to an Italian company.

As I understand it the job was put out to tender. The winning company was not a british one, surprise surpise!
So now workers are getting the hump because they cost too much!:nenau
If I put a quote in for a job and loose it on price well that's my hard luck.
I can't get anywhere by not working for the next quote/job or going on strike:confused::doh
i heard it was an italian company that won the tender, but wont consider british worker for jobs, bloody cheek :sly. this country is going tits up under gorden brown.

Might be something to do with the fact they already have a permanent work force of cheaper workers.
Seems wrong to me whatever way you look at it. Firms want to be in Britain, enjoy the benefits of it (infrastructure, location etc) yet don't want to pay the higher costs of employing local workers who have to pay the higher cost of living over here...

No I think you'll find firms are bribed into UK with assorted EU funding.
The same EU that says we can all work anywhere in the EU!
Now I agree it's a bum deal but we've done it to ourselves.
I've employed a couple of Polish plasterers on site and they were cheaper, worked harder, got a top finish AND didn't spend half the day drinking tea and whinging about everybody else!:augie

Do you remember Auf Wiedersehen Pet?
British workers employed in Germany, because the Germans didn't have to pay tax/NI (or equivalent) for a self-employed Brit - hence cheaper labour. there were a lot of Brit's working around Europe in the 80's
It's not the same I know, but similar all the same:)
I totally agree, british jobs for british workers, but the unions will have to be very careful on this one:eek:
The other side of the coin is the unions in other EU countries will do the same and the brits working there will get kicked out:eek:
So it will come down to the better of 2 evils in the end, we can't have our cake and eat it.

Oh, I don't know... maybe we can all move to the South of France and all the frogs can have the snow and rain instead...
coryton the essex oil refinery, today 100 guys walked out in support of the Total Lindsey refinery workforce, and they may walk one day a week in support, until it's sorted out. it's a pity they did'nt do this a couple of year ago, :nenau
