Quite envious about the log burner, used to love ours at the old house.

Stop teasing Rick, bet it costs next to nothing to run as well.

Cost of running a chain saw is all, my most expensive outlay is running two cars and washing clothes, Rick
Cheers Rick

Just op-pend the front door (direct into the lounge) cos it is 27 in here and 7 outside, too early to strip of yet. Rick

In a slightly associated way, I made a wood fired hot tub last year. One night we may have had a beer too many while cooking the water.... Anyway checked temperature of water and it had gone to 42 degrees, oops.
Ideal is 38, had to put two bags of party ice in there before I got naked :lol

my main heat is oil but my big log burner is linked to the heating and saves me a fortun in oil as when burner is up to temp it shuts oil boiler down,as rick says chainsaw, log splitter effot is all it takes.my system it fully auto .

Don't forget the matches you need to light the fire Rick.
I don't have logs. Just pallets

I got long handle sparky gas lighter and use news paper, Mrs uses fire lighters, but this time of year it rarely goes out and when it needs clearing I do it when there are still some chunky bits burning, clear it all out into a metal bucket sift out the burning lumps and whack em back in with a log on top, Rick

How complicated is the system, Just had a offer accepted on a house. Long term plan is to get new oil boiler and wood burner installed as I get free wood. Maybe a log burner with a rear boiler :)

There are some good burners available that do CH as well, and systems are available to link in with other boilers, thing to watch is that the log burner has a safety system in the event of a power cut, ie a gravity system that heats a water storage cylinder for example, or a back up power supply to keep the pump running, Rick

Forgot to mention, go for an open vented system with a wood burner rather than the modern sealed system, in the event of a leak the open vented will keep it topped up, if water level in a log burner drops with a fire in it will almost certainly do damage, in a sealed system a pressure loss often means the pump will not work, Rick
It's got a an old oil fire/back boiler so the system is probably open vented system. Still early days but hopefully can change to a new oil burner outside or in the kitchen & have a log burner where the current Fire/boiler is.

Sounds good, but one area that causes big problems on open vented is the crucial pipe connections from the header tank, the feed and vent, if done wrong and 90% are, leads to pump over or suck back, very bad long term for systems, Rick

i have a h2 panel set up,google it,its a add to my vented wood burner that links oil and burner all together.there are other set ups about but this is a board thats bolted onto wall next to hot water tank and is all self controlled via 2/3 way valves that divert wood heated water to where its needed.
i also have honeywell evohome set up and its a upto 12 way individgial zone system and i controle it via my phone or the main mobile controler and that works well as well, not cheap but sorted out my cild living room.
i do have 1 rad and hot water tank that acts as the blow off heater when no heat is being asked for by evohome.
