View Full Version : Hi
got an old terrano 99 plate ,had it a few years, needed a fair bit of welding but all done inhouse.use it as a shooting bus.
currently she is sick and will not start.think she has the dreaded curse of the NATS 2 lock out. had a prob with heater plugs slow going off traced to an iffy temp stat ,would run battery down over time.
anyway got new fault now ,has run ok for about 6 months.
went to it in the morning, battery a bit flat failed to start after 3 goes think its locked out.
its done this before and after being left for a while and recharged away she goes, but not this time.been a month now and pulling me hair out ,replaced crank sensor still same,no tacho bounce on engine crank, nats light goes out when you put key in and krank ,doors work on the fob, getting dc supply to fuel solenoid on cranking, and had it out and it works with jumper leads, heater plugs are on a switch to operate relay.kicks on easy start.had pump banjo off filter is clean .run out of ideas.
was starting running fine day before it died.
anyone got any ideas.

This has cropped up before and there’s several fixes but can’t remember all of them. If you do a search on the forums you are bound to find threads with this.
A friend of mine locally had this and his fix was the main thick wires to and from the glow plug relay were corroded, of course the relay is the one just under inner wing at side of battery. He tested this by running a feed direct from battery positive terminal to the glow plug connector next to front of cylinder head just on the drivers side. He was a bit heath robinson and used two spanners but personally I really think that is a bit on the dangerous side. I’m sure you get the idea though.
Pretty sure others will be along soon with more ideas.
we'll had a look on search here various fixes so tried the key fob open close doors twice followed by lazy ferrets 2 stage slow ignition turn on before start and she burst into life.
bloody nats 2 is a pain in the arse when it spits the dummy.
golden rule to myself if she doesn't start first time due to lazy starter or battery down on charge do not continue to crank as the immobilizer locks out the pump.
great forum by the way.

Well done.
It's almost like you have to cycle through the various methods, what works one time, won't always work the next, but something else seems to... Hard part is remembering the methods, as once everything is working, it can be a long time before you have to remember them all again.
Basically, if you try to start the car, and the battery is low enough for the door locks to click as you turn the key, you are up the proverbial river...

Not sure I understand the slow turn on fully but could it be worn ignition barrel.

I found it in one of the T2 Service manuals I down loaded the first time I had the problem, a long time ago now, and can't remember exactly where any more, but basically, you have to stop in each of the Off, accessory, run, back to accessory, and then off positions a few times without actually starting the car, and the ECU sends a reset to presumably the NATS... It's a bit like if you press the hazzard light switch several times, it send another command to the ECU, but I can't now remember what that one was as I never needed to do it, but there's a warning in the service manual about it.. (I have a feeling it was something bad!)
I can't say I've ever experienced this myself but I want to just so I can see it and have a play at fixing one myself.
It's one issue I've seen come and go a few times with various members over my years of membership on the forum.
Some members I've seen get issues the same way as the OP here and others seem to have induced it by trying to replace the stereo with built in hazard switch for a Single DIN aftermarket unit and their own Hazard Switch.
I have a good video that someone linked ages ago in another thread but don't have access to it at work as they have blocked me signing into Chrome with my personal Gmail account so can't get at my bookmarks :doh
I'll try and re-post it later on tonight :thumb2 It shows a great way of starting the truck bypassing the NATS to prove that it's the issue
from my search on this issue the early terranos had NATS 1 that can be by passed but the later NATS 2 like on my 99 plate is not an option.

Yes I have had it with a Bosch pump, do not think it happens with the Zexel, in my case lights left on = flat battery recharge or jump makes no difference again in my case has happened 3 times now need to leave it for hours then it kicks into life, I have not tried Clive's method but will bear it in mind for the next time it does it, Rick
