Any one on here BM literate, My daughters 120d has fuel problems and after a garage having it for two weeks and given up it is now in my workshop, but I do not know ef about them or its damed computer, for a start diagnostics says low fuel at start up, but live diagnostics says 400bar rail pressure, but an old injector that opens at 200 did not respond, am looking at the pressure valve on the end of the rail but inconclusive at the mo, any ideas, Rick

Woah  So do you have your own diagnostic machine?

Thanks Mark, already seen that post, yes got a mate with a diagnostic and borrowed it, got the fuel rail and all its bits off, seems the pressure regulator needs 9v to turn it on, in the off position it is open so no rail pressure, so need to check for voltage and also trying to make adapter to fit gauge to high pressure pipe but it is different thread to anything I can find, Rick

Turns out it is the high pressure pump that has failed, interestingly it is the subject of a recall by BM, so she may yet be lucky and get it done for nowt, but will not hold my breath, in passing I have to say I have seen some SHXT engineering in my time but this motor takes the biscuit, Rick

BMW seem to have dropped a lot of clangers with some more recent models. Back in the 1970/80's camshaft failure was common then they went through a long period of over engineering (like MB) that helped build their reputation against the Japanese competition.

The most recent example of a bad engine is the so called N47 engine a 4-cyl 1.6 & 2 litre diesel they have had timing chain issues that are very expensive to fix mainly affected in the 2007-9 era.

Mercedes went through a period of ECU failures caused by very small oil leaks on the engine cam sensors seals. The oil travelled by capillary action along the wiring loom eventually entering the ECU connection plug.

Yes that's the engine, although ours is 2011, timing chain on the rear, so engine out to replace, how sick is that, the pump failure we have is not the fuel side but wear/break up on the cam or follower, yet to remove the pump to see for myself, looks to me like early pumps were good but later not so good, do I see Nissan here around 2000? They were supposed to have fixed them certainly by 2009.

They seem to be getting fragile as they get more efficient!!

Finally got the BM up and running this eve, obtained a pump but was waiting for the drive cog locking tool, stripped the old pump before Tristan got the replacement one fully fitted, simple two lobed cam, follower with roller, trouble is the roller was triangular, so a 10mm roller killed a BM for a few weeks, Rick

That must be very satisfying to have got it running where the garage gave up well done mate.

When I was at MB we had a number of cases usually older models (5 yrs plus) had faults that could not be diagnosed / fixed by the dealership. Eventually these cases were passed to MB at Milton Keynes for them to either come to the dealership & fix or in some cases vehicles were taken to them.

Our record for keeping a customers vehicle at the Derby dealership was for an early Smart-for-2 that needed some parts that were not available in the short term. As the vehicle had been serviced by us from new we were obliged to supply a free Smart loan car.

We had the vehicle for just over a year! The customer lived in a very rural area - our returned loan car was so filthy not just underneath with cow muck, the interior was so badly stained it had to be specialist cleaned. The dealership ended up invoicing the customer for the full valet - not sure if they ever paid though.

Another memorable case was a fairly new MB S Class that was just out of warranty (factory 3 years) that would periodically open the sun roof when parked at night. We had the car at the dealership a number of times over the weekend but it never faulted.

Suspicion was that the remote locking system was being activated by another vehicles key fob. After almost 2 years of regular visits & a couple of months at MB Milton Keynes the owner gave up and got rid. Only saving grace was he bought it from another dealership.
