View Full Version : Patrol Engine Swap
This subject is always lurking in the corners of my mind...
I know that some of you guys have had 1st hand experience and others are very knowledgeable, so although I don't have the money to undertake such a task at the moment, I thought I might start a thread where the collective knowledge of this group could be focused!
I look forward to your input! :thumbs
I think Engine options is a logical place to start!
Given that my Patrol has 158hp & 280 lb/ft of torque (From factory) from its 4 cylinder engine, more of both is obvious.
Sure I would love to shoehorn a 6.6 Duramax engine in there, but fear this might be unrealistic... Especially here in the UK.
Most popular options I see at the moment are the BMW's M57 and the Merc's OM606... There's still a lot of options with these two engines as they've had quite a few versions over the years.
Power starts around 170hp for the earlier models ranged up to 235hp (ish) in the newest M57 & 130hp to 170hp (ish) for the OM606... Obviously tuneable, but from the off the M57 looks more favourable.

I would prefer the BMW bud, how abouts a CAT engine?
Or a SKYLINE ENGINE :D

Well, we do know some one who's done that! :augie
I guess I have to think about the availability of parts too... My 1st thought when thinking about suitable engines was the TDV6 that I had in my Discovery 3. That had 188hp and 325lb/ft, it could shift the D3 along nicely.
For something like that, all the conversion parts would have to be specially made. :doh

Don't Skyline it!!! We've seen that done already, we like new, fresh and exciting
Don't worry... I couldn't afford to Skyline it! :lol

I'm going OM606 Beautiful smooth engine and extremely strong out of the box. Stock engine spec and high milers still good for 500bhp before any expensive internals .
Engines are reasonably easily sourced but the pumps need to be binned. Get the early mechanical pump. That as stock is good for for well over 200bhp However, spend £700 and get the pump done by Dieslel pump UK or a tad more for a Meken version , and you've got fuel for 450 bhp
You'll need a bigger turbo ofcourse but again DPUK have all that stuff off the shelf.
All the above assuming you want big power, if not then stock 606 is over 200bhp in mechanical mode. No ecu, just 6 silky smooth german pistons getting very angry very quickly :D
Adaptor kits avail for your truck too.
All rolling road tested and proven.
Not sure on the BMW lump but the 606 is lighter than the 4.2 nissan lump I've taken out.

How about the above engine standard form is 237 bhp with 410 lb ft torque lots of chip upgraded on the market.
Bound to be a few engines on the used market.
I have the more pedestrian 215 bhp unit with 510 Nm of torque in my WK1 it has is plenty of Oooo mph for me!
Now that's what I'm talking about... Some good insights right there!
I will have to start learning about pumps and such as I'm not sure what you can and can't use with what engine!:nenau
More power & torque is what I'm after... Not that the benchmark is set particularly high! :lol

Oi, that's my line :lol
The big difference is the electrickery needed to run these modern engines. The om606 is direct injection. No need for ecu or owt. Mine is 179 ( or was when it left the factory ) take the cat off and open up the zorst and immediately get 190 bhp.
You can buy a s/h mechanical pump for about 250 quid. There are the element kits too for about 170 but you'll need to do the work yourself. I wouldn't fancy that
Old skool squeeze squirt bang = OM606
M75 and others need a stand alone ECU to run them OR some proper work on the donor loom to do :/
I'm suddenly liking the sound of the OM606!
Old School for the win! :clap
Also, sorry for stealing your line! :lol:lol:lol

They also put a V8 diesel in the ML a 420 CDi with a 4.0 litre engine for the UK market sometime around 2007/9 they only sold them in the UK for about a year but have been in Europe for several years.
I picked one up from Leicester and drove it to Derby - it was brand new so could not gun it but the torque was awesome.
306 bhp with 700 Nm or 516 lb ft of torque low down at 2000 rpm!
Just had a message from DieselPumpUK... They Reckon the Auto is a no go!
They have only converted, or have conversion kits for manuals! :doh

Ah didn't realise you were on auto.
I've got manual box luckily.
Can you not ho manual ? Plenty of box options out there I should think.

That's a bugger Jay :doh
To be fair, just like I said on Facebook, there's nothing wrong with the RE4R03A box. It's a strong box and I've heard of Aussies running it mated to some beefy engine conversions (like an LS1) with no issues and it was used in the production 300ZX, so it can run some serious horsepower :nenau
Guess if they've not converted any autos they'll be reluctant to to experiment and would have to start from scratch on gearbox adaptors.
I'm planning to convert my shorty to manual at some point (love the auto but it's the only ecu in the whole truck and I want things as simple as possible). I know the Y60s have the holes for the clutch pedal etc all there but just blanked off, maybe the Y61s are similar? :nenau

If the Aussies can match a Chevy V8 diesel to the RE4R03A auto then the OM606 should be doable https://www.marks4wd.com/mfk605cdzd30a.html :lol

No conventional clutch pedal in F1 cars except engaging from rest then all changes are paddle change automatics, Formula E no clutch pedal !
Pretty sure no clutch pedal in a Tesla, Ferrari have stopped making cars with a clutch pedal in 2016. Mercedes SLS - automatic only. Bugatti Veyron - direct shift 7 speed auto only.

It's not a bad price either! :naughty
The only Chevy V8 Diesel that I can find at the moment is the 6.6 Duramax I first posted about! :lol:lol (Maybe it's meant to be... Although it is £6,400!)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Duramax-6-6-V8-Diesel-Lb7-Lly-Lmm-Engine-Chevrolet-Gmc/254225670537?hash=item3b3107e189:g:Jw0AAOSwuXxc1E1 P
Looks ropey too!
I'd also have to figure out what 'Stand alone' ECU I'd need to control the Auto box.
What a rabbit hole!
