Here i'm again.

This time i bought a Ford Maverick 2.7 LWB (1997/12).
In good overall condition.

Changed some parts with the Terrano 2 (wheels, spacers and radio), installed the steering idler brace and there we go...

The first photo after the changes.

Salt is a pain in the UK I guess in Portugal sunshine is a pain when it comes to interior trim.

Indeed, the sunshine is great but the paint and the plastics hate it.

I agree, but i can't fit 7 in a SWB Terrano.

I can fit a 9 in a SWB Patrol (160/260), but not confortable seat for the mother-in-law!!! :sly

It is easy to forget how lucky we are to have access to such good quality and sensible priced food !!!!!!!
We eat out much more in Portugal than we ever did in UK!!!!! Mainly because it is such an enjoyable experience and such good value!!!!! ------ and I am quite fond of red wine!!!!

Interesting to hear reports about the LED headlamp bulbs.

In the road not much diference, low range on the high beam.

Offroading, way better then the standard. Better light, brighter.

Hello everybody.

Keeping the journal updated, a little tlc in my Maverick this saturday.

The front was bothering me, as the old supports from the front protection were sticking out of the bumper and could hurt someone.
Out with the bumper, removed the old supports and while at it installed new ones for the new LED lights.

Cleaned everything and painted to old the rust for a few more years.

While painting i also gave a try with the front grille.

Thoughts?

Hi there.

Does anybody knows the colour code for my Maverick?

It will be on the VIN plate in the engine bay, it's under a section called colour/trim etc

Once you've got that I have a comprehensive paint code list here;

This week the Red Mav increased 5cm (2").
New rear springs (from jimnybits) and a few turns on the torsion bars.

Now i'm searching for a new set of shocks for the rear.

What is the best option to get the most travel distance between closed and fully opened?
Does anybody know the default sizes?

lfteixeira
06-05-2019, 11:46
Well, to help others here are some measures.

News springs on the back and a few turns on the torsion bars.

where - before - after
front - 86cm - 89cm
rear - 87cm - 94cm

I can't lift more in the front, and the rear will drop a bit with some weight in the trunk and a few months on the springs.

About the shocks.

With the standard ones:
Fully compressed: 36cm (disconected from the car)
Compressed: 46cm (connected to the car)
Rest position: 54cm
Fully opened: 60cm

So, i have a travel distance of 14cm.

From what i saw i can increase up to 68cm without messing with hoses and others, gaining 8cm of travel distance.

The new shocks should have 40cm fully compressed and 68cm fully open.

Sorry for using metric measures! :augie

Well.

Keeping my "Captain Log" up to date.

Maverick with 331411 Km (+/- 206000 miles).
This weekend i did the biggest travel ever (for me) on a 4x4, 1661Km (1032 miles).
2,5 tanks of fuel!!! Average of 11L/100 (25.6 mpg).

(On road tyres from a Pajero, 245/70 R16)

Solved a air leak (broken pipe from the compressor to the wastegate) and found that my turbo is going away... white smoke from time to time...

That's it for now!

Updating the topic.

Reinforced idler arms in both sides and steering bar.
Gone with the standard bushings and replaced with bronze with lubrification.

http://saabupgrade.com/ford/20191115_142607.jpg

I don't know the name for this, but its where the lower suspension arm bar atached. The hole was starting to get oval instead of round.

http://saabupgrade.com/ford/20191115_142613.jpg

After the lift springs, some bigger profender shocks.

Finally, some questions:

1st: I don't have water in the front windshield. I don't hear the motor working. Where to start searching?

2nd: My turbo is starting to go. White smoke. What is the turbo that i have?
The part number is 144117F400, maybe a Garret TB25, but what version?
And the main question, what is the best replacement? Same? Bigger? Any sugestions?

Thanks.

Washer bottle is under the OSF wing, pump can be changed without taking the wing off but difficult to say the least, what makes you think your turbo is going? to test it you need a pressure gauge teed into the waste gate pipe, Rick

Sorry can’t help you with Turbo but assuming your washer pump is like mine, it’s the same pump for the rear washer too. It’s a uk seller but at least you’ll know which pump. As Rick says you can change it without removing wing but it’s easier to remove front section of plastic wing protector.

I already removed the plastic below the front wing but only reached what seams to be a level sensor. No hoses attached.

The turbo is making white smoke under acceleration, but more when i lift the throttle.

I'd be checking, Fuel Filer, Fuel Inlet Banjo Bolt Gauze Filter, Fuel Lines, Swirl Chamber and Pickup Pipes in that order :thumb2

Now for the hard part, in wish i need some help.

The engine continues to "sputter" in this sequence:
1. Neutral
2. Full throttle
3. Release throttle
4. Back on the throttle (here he sputter, white smoke and them he goes)

I left the car in a shop that deal with diesel engines (well, now i'm not so sure about their knowledge).

At this moment he checked the engine compression, all cylinders are good, around 23 bar each.
Then he check the injectors, all of them were working around 100 bar.
He said it's low and tune them to work at 125bar (is this right???).

The problem is the lead injector (the one with a wire), he say'd that he doesn't know if he can tune that injector, he doesn't know if can affect the "reads" that the injector sends to the pump.

How can we test to see if the electronic part of the injector is working?

Any info about this subject would be appreciated! :thumb2

Thanks.

Around 120 bar is OK it is not the cracking pressure that is most important it is the spray pattern, I do not know of a way to test the No 1 injector but if you have no fault code relating to it then it must be working OK and it can be adjusted same as the others, have you checked the MAF it is the first place I would go, Rick

Well, i'm back with mixed feelings.

1st The Maverick is back together and it pulls like he never did (and the power box is disconnected for now).
2nd I have lots of errors on the ECU, altough none of the symptons.

---------------------------------------

From what i could find with the paper clip, i found 11 errors:

13 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
15 - ???
17 - ???
21 - Ignition Signal
22 - Fuel Pump
28 - Cooling Fan Circuit
34 - Knock Sensor
36 - EGR Control-Back Pressure Transducer
37 - Knock Sensor
42 - Fuel Temperature Sensor
47 - Crankshaft Position Sensor

A video from the errors:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTjw5mgzZHg

------------------------

What was done:
The fuel injection pump was in very bad shape, full of engine oil inside (faulty ring) and with a lot of usage inside.
So, i bought a second hand fuel pump in way better shape then mine but with the electric parts damaged.
We used all the mechanics of the new one and the eletronics from mine.

This was the fuel pump inside:
http://saabupgrade.com/fordmaverick/IMG-20200611-WA0010.jpg

Fuel from the fuel filter (left) and fuel from the pump (right):
http://saabupgrade.com/fordmaverick/20200611_182242.jpg

Some guidance on what can be generating all these errors would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Yesterday i found that workshop guide.
I will give it a try today.

Well, didn't get the chance to put my hand on my Maverick.
I will be collecting it today, the mechanic didn't solve the problem.
He gave up.

I will need your help to resolve this.

Today i will begin with the workshop give to read and reset the errors and do a visual inspection of the engine bay (cables, etc..).

There is any guide with the electric connections on the Maverick? 2.7TDI ?

There are two pumps on the Terrano, Bosch & Zexell both have different code reading via the paper clip method, one has short and release to get the codes and short and hold to clear, the other has short and hold to get codes, then release to clear, this is why there is a lot of confusion re codes, Rick

I'm almost positive it's the bosch set up that you leave connected to read the codes???
Been a while since I've done it to be honest.

Thanks for the feedback.

My pump is a Zexell.

The problem was lack of knowledge of the mechanic (fuel pump expert) and electrician.
The electrician wanted to take my ECU to repair it, it must be a burned track he say'd...
And the fuel pump guy didn't disconnected the battery while removing the pump...

Using the workshop guide i reset the ECU, turn off ignition, on again and no MIL !!! :clap

Try to read again, it gave my the error 55... man... again... wait the 55 code is: "No faults found"... Happy again!!! :D

Went for a drive and it goes like never did and this with the tuning box disconnected...

This movie is over... let's start the next.

Now i have a rear locker to install.
Bought a ET136 (Eletric locker), let's see if it's as good has the air lockers.

Body roll: since i lift the Maverick (2"), new rear springs (jimnybits) and a tweak in the front torsion bars, i'm afraid of driving above 60mph (100Km/h), any time i have to do a course correction it feel like the Maverick doesn't "respond" in time.

Since i removed the rear anti roll bar, i'm thinking is there anything in the market to make the roll bar disconnectable from inside? Like the Wranglers have?

Thoughts?

Well, no comments, let's move on.

Installed the rear rollbar again and the roll, as expected, improved.
Lost around 1" of wheel travel.

Got to drive it more to fell the differences.

Another topic, poweeeeeeeeeer.

Since the fuel pump was repaired the Maverick now goes like never before, so, i reinstalled the power box... and boy, he pulls very very well.

As usual i can't be happy for too long... so the clutch don't hold that much torque. Example, 5th gear below 2000RPM, press the fun pedal and as soon as it pass the 2000rpm it goes to 3000rpm in a second and stays there until the speed catches up. (like an automatic).

So, recomendations for a chutch? Sames as the original? Upgraded? Customized? Thoughts?

Banshee fitted a 3.0 ltr clutch in his 2.7 with no drama but have read in a few places the the flywheel may need machining depending on wear.
A good quality standard clutch should give you approx 80 - 100k miles :thumb2

Electric Rear Locker!?!?!?!? Lets hear some more and see some pictures :naughty

An electrical rear anti roll bar link would be amazing, I'm doing a lot of mileage at the moment in my truck and having driven the 3.0 I've just pulled in the short distance around the estate I live on, it's amazing to feel the difference that a rear ARB offers, doing a lot of distance without out makes you feel seasick :flush:

My Y61 has an electric rear ARB, I might take a look at that and see if a Y61 setup could be modded to fit a Terrano :naughty

Yes, they call it ET136.
Here a Pajero Sportwagon and a Terrano 2 are running with those e-lockers. Lets see how long will they last. At least they won't have the air leaks on the seals that usually affects the air ones.

I will try to take some pictures of it.

Somebody also told me that about the rear electric arb from the Y61. With some TLC (that I'm not able to do) it can be a solution.

On the clutch subject, a clutch from Exedy is worth it?

That's good news in regards to the rear ARB from a Y61, when it dries up here I might have a crawl under the patrol and have a look to see what would be involved :naughty

Told you Banshee ;)

Y61 Trol electric ARB disconnect is 3 wires I think. Presumably one wire connects to the dash light to illuminate it when it's disconnected. Y60 Trols had a cable operated one. My 4.2 must have had it at some point in its life as the handle is still there under the dash (I think you pulled and twisted the handle to lock it "off").

I removed the one off my Y61, all it is is a fancy ARB link that looks similar to a miniature hydraulic ram with an electrically actuator which operates a jaw/pin for locking it (Y60 cable would've been connected straight to the locking pin). The end of the cylinder section is attached to the chassis ARB link mount and the end of the piston section is attached to the ARB. When unlocked the jaw/pin moves out of the piston section and that section is able to move in and out of the cylinder section so in effect removing the ARB.

Neat idea and works well, when it works, but the electric one is known to fail over time and become temperamental at connecting back up again. That's what happened to mine and then I fitted my 2" lift and removed the link and earthed the sensor wire :nenau

Such as:

Isn't it good looking? :)

Now the rear sits higher then the front, due to the weight from the winch.

Should i increase the height of the front (torsion bars) or reduce the rear (switching springs) ?

Yes wind the bars up a tad, but is your winch really that heavy? my winch and bumper weighs 100Kg so changed the springs, Rick

The winch has synthetic rope, so it should weight around 30Kg plus mounting plate.

Next weekend i will give the bars a little bit more, to see how it seats.
