Hi we are Pamala & Nigel
We spend most of our time in central Portugal, we have bought a Terrano 1 as it seems to be very practical to use here.
A lot of older cars are used in Portugal, partly as newer cars are more expensive than UK (import duty is applied---- although illegal under EU law!!!!!) Also the older cars are easier to repair/ mantain--------- because of the climate, no salt is used on the roads and it is generally extremely dry, so the dreaded rust does not attack most cars!!!!

Hi, thanks for the welcome!
If you were here in May you probably experienced an unusually wet spring/ early summer!!!!!------- once it did stop Raining it has been very hot and dry!!!!
If you were here offroading it probably suited you just fine.
Our off roading days have now finished I think, the terrano is for practical use but as you must be aware a lot of access tracks to properties are very hard on the average road car!!!!
We would have no issues running 'green lanes' but have no intention of beating our old classic to death-------- we did all that in our old Land Rover days!!!!
We were a little surprised at how easy it was to obtain brake parts for it's 'MOT'.
Ithink spares will be no issue in the future!!!

Welcome aboard, sounds like a 4x4 is a necessity where you live. Not a necessity for most here but we dam well love driving our trucks, mind you state roads are in in my area not be long before it’s a necessity here too :doh

It was dry and hot, well for us anyway, only had one day of rain but it was freezing of a night time, it got down to below 5 deg c, my patrol took a right bashing whilst out there, still nearly sorted all the issues the trip threw up.

Hi of course Madeira is an island so in general it is cooler, cooled by sea during the summer and I wouldn't think it gets quite as cold in the winter???? We would love a sea breeze now as it has been hot for ages------ over 30c, but not over 40c like last summer I don't think???---- too hot to work during the day!!!!, Any important jobs must be done before 10AM then just try to keep cool the rest of the day. Next week it should be getting much cooler so we have our grape harvest planned for then!!!!, We just have a few vines around our property---- last year ( our first wine making) we made around 600Litres of red, but this year's grapes have been a disaster in our area so we will be happy with whatever we can get!!!!!
We went to Madeira once, the main thing we think of is the hilly terrain!!!!!!

We are a bit north of Tomar----- near the Serra da Estrella, it is quite mountainous in our whole region and is now green again after the tragic fires last year which left so much of Portugal blackened!!!
Soo many trees died in the fires that it has opened up the country and now you can see so much more, but the eucalyptus have come back really strong as the thrive on fire!!!!! They are not liked in general as they are so flammable and do apparently trash the ground------- they are grown as a cash crop and used in the paper/ pulp industry.
