HI gents
First time I've had decent signal or Wi-Fi to post an update on the trip. The ferry was 2 hours late getting in to santander, which cocked up our plan for Saturday evening. We were supposed to would camp about 3-4 hours away from santander but only managed a couple of hours which left us a ten hour drive to sagres for Sunday. Bit of a slog on Sunday, I had fitted a new vortex type top to my snorkel on the Friday just before we left, didn't realise it didn't let enough air in and it was screaming like a banshee with the air rushing through the veins, the truck was not pulling well either so had to whip that off and drive without a top on the snorkel for the 10 hour drive on Sunday, when we got to camp I cut a load of the veins out so it's ok now but it will go in the bin when I get home and I'll stick the original on. Done some gods tracks on monday and today, I'm currently posting some more videos on YouTube but I will add some pics on here.
That's it for now

Truck us awesome, we are wild camping in the most beautiful spot tonight by a river, I haven't got enough signal to put up any pics today but as soon as I get some 4g or WiFi I'll get them up with a video of the water crossing we done to get here. It is everything I hoped it would be.

Troll has taken a bit of a bashing over the last few days after the oil light scenario we had a power steering fluid loss and also a leak on the auto transmission cooler, the rear light has had to be a gaffer taped on and now the weld on the exhaust coming from the catalytic converter just before the bend has snapped so the troll now sounds like a tank. Even though the tracks are relatively easy they are so bumpy it really does take it out of the car

How did the truck hold up overall then mate?
In general I was very pleased with the truck, no major issues, the tracks were brutal constant vibrations and although I thought I’d covered all the basis on the service I had prior to going there were things I never even thought of that could have been done prior to going. Any rubber mount needs to be checked, if any are slightly pershished get them changed, that caused 2 issues, trans cooler rubber and radiator mount rubber failure. Exhaust, well shit happens, I had always planned a SS exhaust. Driveshaft oil seal maybe unlucky!, oil light issue was just water ingress but dried out. On the whole it was awesome, it done everything the other trucks did and more. It is definitely under powered for the size of it but I knew that when I bought it so very pleased. The bill for the repairs is going to be expensive in excess of a grand without the exhaust but with motors you have to expect the unexpected.

Knowing this stuff after a trip is where you can really start to personalise you're vehicle. More importantly what stuff you need to carry and the stuff you can do without!

I'm surprised you say she's underpowered.
Have you Dawes & needle valved her yet?

If you're considering a new performance exhaust, the Patrol's can be chipped easily.
That'll give you a bit more oomph.
Exhaust is my last mod on the to do list. Everyone I know says do it and allow you're truck to really breathe for the first time. I can't wait, but alas, pennies...

No I haven't done the dawes valve, due to my past experience with messing around with things something always tends to go wrong so I thought I'd leave her standard other than a exhaust but I have considered having it remapped

What's the difference between doing a remap or dawes valve and needle valve?

Is it just price. Do you need to buy a different ecu for it and then map it on a rolling road?

Can you take it to a tuners and map the standard ecu for the same result as the dawes and needle valve. I don't quite understand it all, the pros and cons and what to do.

I think you can do a remap without any other alterations, I chipped my navara with a box. Dawes needle jet etc is fitted and there’s fettling to do which puts me off but if someone wants to volunteer to do it raise your hands :clap

Mr K
27-05-2018, 22:32
Yeah I'm just not sure on the overall pictures with these.

Putting a 'chip' effectively just ups the fuelling, unless you get a stand alone ecu to map all parameters, whereas the manual dawes and needle valve adjusts the max boost and spool up but what about the air, or is that sorted by the MAF, in which case that would be the way forward.

Barrbeast
28-05-2018, 00:07
Dawes and needle valve on the 3.0 are all about taking boost control away from the ecu which then allows you to do things like blank the egr and fit larger exhaust etc without causing the 3.0 overboosting issues. Better performance is just an added bonus. You fit the valves and a boost gauge then take her for a drive and tweak the valve screws, rinse and repeat, until boost levels fit the parameters you're looking for (lots of guidance on the Aussie forums).

Chip/remap is a totally different kettle of fish to dawes and needle as it's solely about performance rather than engine protection.

I wouldn't even think about changing the exhaust system from standard on the back of a remap.

Have to agree with Davey though, I never found my 3.0 underpowered, even before I tweaked the turbo vnt stop (more basic alternative to dawes and needle valves) and fitted a straight through exhaust... but, like Davey's, my Y61 was a manual so it might be a 3.0 auto thing. Certainly, I always found you had to work the gearbox to get the best from the ZD30, which isn't as easy to do with an auto.

Might be worth looking at fitting a transgo shift kit to your autobox Wheelie, transformed my Y60s autobox (same type) :nenau

Also, what tyres are you running Wheelie, and what pressures? Airing down is definitely something to try and do next time. I've always done it and it makes a huge difference to smooth out shocks/vibration over rough terrain, my muds usually sit about 26psi for laning.

Davey, have you looked at just getting the stainless tubing and bends and fitting a straight through yourself? If you're just replacing from the downpipe or flexi it's fairly simple to do and doesn't cost the earth :nenau

That’s great thinking Rob.
I’ve found a couple of guys that are s**t hot race preppers.
They do just what you’ve suggested with all their projects cos they like the full bore aspect of the manufactured bends.
Their ss welding is brilliant and they can turn the job around in a morning.
Should be about £350 all in.
