That got your attention :lol
But I am on a mission. Now that the project truck is fixed I got home from work and stuck a dog cage in the back. Put the dog in the cage and went to a local woodland area that we have walked for 30 years. Walked up a footpath and noticed that some work had been carried out on the style but thought no more about it. Got over the style and then saw a sign pictured below. This has been a footpath for years but now looks like the land owner is trying to stop access. Poor chap will be getting a visit from the local council soon as I知 going to get the grid references and report it.
Has anyone got any experience of this sort of things,
I知 pretty sure that if a footpath is established over many years unchallenged then it actually becomes a right of way but I知 not 100% sure of that fact.

Hi Jim,
I was talking about this with a work mate just the other day. Did find this whist we were chatting.

Each council has a rights of way officer, for byways and footpaths

I have a public path on the edge of my property runs about 300 Mtrs, I wrote the the office in Brighton and told them I would be fencing it off with a style at each end, they kindly sent me some decal arrows to fix to the styles and said that I must allow at least 1 Mtr width and no barbed wire, we rarely have walkers but we do see once or twice a year walkers with clip boards and I guess they are registering that they have walked this path in order to stop it decaying into none use, so I am sure your local ramblers club etc will be doing the same on the one you show, get in touch with them and check as they are a powerful voice, Rick

As said get in touch with local rights of way officer Jim :thumb2
For details of the path some councils put decent maps on their websites but they aren't the final word.

Well on the council website it is not marked on their map of rights of way. OS have it marked on their map but not as a footpath. I知 going to get the grid references of start and finish, then start by contacting the local council and quote some of the terms used on the ramblers website and see what happens. I知 pretty sure it is covered by the ramblers web page posted on here so thanks for that.

It could be a path th ate been used but had no legal standing, so if the owners want to they can close it.

Seems likely if its not on an o/s map as a right of way, you might not have any success Jim :(

There are such things as 'permissive paths' we had them all over the estate I managed before I retired.
They were not subject to highway regulations concerning footpaths, and we could close them at will.
We of course put up advance warning and tried to provide diversions/alternative routes when possible
.......often ignored......
so when we were felling and someone jogs passed you as the tree is falling, cos they ignored the warning signs and the bloke in hi viz stopping the route
......well I'm sure you can imagine both the reaction of the forester (usually me) and some ripe language........the reply back was often........it's okay I run here every day........:nenau

Well if you look at the link that Thomas posted for the ramblers you値l see actually the law is on the side of the common man in this case. So I知 putting a case together complete with photos and OS grid refs. Have spoken to several people who always remember it and have used it as a footpath. Indeed on many maps it is marked as a footpath. The bit is well and truly between my teeth.
