Has anyone heard anything about changes to the MOT from May this year?
Apparently one of the changes is a rolling change over date so that vehicles 40 years old will no longer need an MOT? So in this case vehicles registered in 1978 and next year 79 and so on?
Obviously there are consequences for vehicles in an unroadworthy condition and quite rightly so.

not heard that but makes sense, sort of related, what happened to stuff going tax exempt.
wasn't it about 25 year old, scheme started, but then was stopped, to me would be fair if tax exempt applied as per Mot cut off. Whilst think 25 years old for a classic is questionable I'd go for 40 years, after all talking about upto most of original S reg as of now.

DVLA website has confirmed the changes “vehicles registered 40 years ago are MOT exempt unless substantially changed as they are regarded as vehicles of historic interest” as of May vehicles registered on or before 1978 and it is a rolling date so next year it will be 1979.
It is the drivers responsibility to ensure the vehicle is of a roadworthy condition and as such if inspected and found to be dangerous the vehicle can be confiscated as with any vehicle of course. I’m sure common sense would prevail and if a minor defect was picked up you will be told to get it fixed but I’d rather not test that theory.
The last I heard about the tax exemption it had been changed to vehicles registered before 1976. However, I have read something about this being brought into line with the MOT exemption.
Now this doesn’t effect my plans for the MG this year but it’s one less hurdle as someone pointed out and makes it easier to be a rolling restoration. It doesn’t mean I’ll have a dangerous vehicle on the road.

funny as the original rolling scheme was axed just before my 74RRC would have qualified, not that i owned it, looks as this was in 2014 it would have qualified again, though reckon its long since become razor blades, unless with lord Lucan and Shergar.......

Yeah just looked at it all on the government website again, looks like after May this year both MOT and Tax exemptions will be linked. I’ll cross that bridge when the MG is nearer completion later this year.

I'm thrilled too cause my cortina falls into this category. Plus although V6 cossie going in its still mainly original LMAO :lol

Had a quick chat with the MOT bloke this morning. He’s confirmed it but doesn’t like the idea but from a financial point of view he wouldn’t but I do agree with his point about safety concerns. He did point out that you can still MOT the vehicle on a voluntary basis annually in just the same way as before. Quite rightly so he has pointed out that if you were involved in an accident you have a little more proof your vehicle has been kept in a roadworthy condition.

that is a very good point, if don't test it then how do you its road worthy.

I think most classic owners will still mot their cars. Trouble is the mot today is a bit off point for classics. Ideally there should be an old skool version of the mot for classics ☺

As far as I know that still applies, for instance before the inspector starts the test he looks up details of the vehicle in question and gathers data such a brake test readings, emissions, seat belt requirements etc etc, Rick
