Wise ones, I need your advice. Recently got a nice new bike, another one for Mrs perelaar, and thinking now of ways to increase our range of bike rides a bit.

Does a bike carrier fit on the T2 tow hook - as in, is the spare wheel not in the way of the upright thing on the carrier?
Don't want to spoil our other car by adding an aftermarket tow hook...

As a complete guess I would say yes 'cos it sticks out a mile but I reckon there will be a bike rack designed to fit over rear mounted spares, if I can think of it :D

there are tow bar bolt ons designed to work around the spare.

also spare wheel mounts.

I have a pair of bolt onto spare wheel which would be fine with a steel wheel
but wont fit the shape of the centre of my alloy wheel.

Am considering taking spare off then mounting these bars to spare's carrier.

There is one of many that fit on spare, that has a terrano in image.

I've seen the type that has a bracket sandwiched between towball and towbar. There's two types of carrier and one of them is designed to on a 4x4 with a spare wheel on tailgate. Not sure if I saw them on www.towsure.co.uk but it was a long time ago when I last looked.

Fine, just make sure the wheel is secure and tied down.

We have a tow bar plate sandwiched between the tow ball and bracket, but due to the spare wheel, can't be used, so we have two spare holes on the tow bar mounting plate, so I got some heavy duty steel pipe, minimum 16mm i/d two lenghs about 12" long, then some M16 all thread, screwfix, and bolted the plate behind the spare wheel. using the tubes as spacers.

Note M16 all thread is not strong enough on it's own without the outer tube spacer, it flexes and bends..:thumb2

edit, the steel tube had an i/d of at least 25mm, if I recall, I used rubber grommets on the thread to centralise the all thread in the tube. The tube wall was at least 5 mm so quite heavy duty. If I can I will post pic...

Both of ours have alloys for spares... does that make me double too posh??

I have not used a carrier on the T2, but when I had the Vitara, having it on the towbar was a real pain, as you had to take everything off to get in the boot, so I ended up getting one that hooked over the spare wheel, and had a couple of straps to the top and bottom of the door.

I have a Witter bike rack that sandwiches between tow ball and tow bar with a length of pipe up to a foam covered u-shaped carrier.
Obviously no good at all for a terrano, especially with a swan neck hitch.
So I took an angle grinder to the pipe and cut it into 3 sections, welded it back together with a kink in it to bring the carrier closer to the window, and bolted the mounting plate to the spare wheel carrier. I used one of the wheel studs and drilled a second to use a tow ball nut and bolt.
Have been looking for photos but can only find this one.

I only have this as it cost me nowt but it covers the brake lights so a tail board is needed, or a caravan:lol
