Here we go in the search for a Patrol.

Not many about and all those I've checked in my age/price bracket all seem to have major corrosion issues at MOT but 1 only has minor reference and I'm not sure how big a problem it could be. Having a look personally at this stage isn't an option as it's a bit too far away. Its a 2000 3.0 Di SE+ with 128k miles. Any views -

Test Date: February 2017
Advisory notice item(s)

Test date: 13 October 2016

Offside Rear Anti-roll bar rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)

Test date: 24 June 2015
Advisory notice item(s)
Rear Brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c)
Rear Anti-roll bar rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)
Oil leak
corrosion offside rear inner & outer sill

No reference the sills prior to June 2015. Assuming rear inner & outer sill needs sorting is it a big job?
MOT dates....mmmmmm

mot dates, twice a year???

Was it sold each time with 12 months mot?
Check owners. How Many and when.

Needs a close, hands on inspection, small hammer, big magnet, and powerful torch.

Sill metal can be easily replaced, chassis and suspension brackets etc hmmm.... something else.

Hi rusty, in the same neighbourhood then?

Try to hang out for a later 3.0l if you can say 2003/04
You'll be out of the danger zone regarding time-bomb Patrols for just a bit more money.
The earlier 2.8 Patrols behave better than the earlier 3.0l ones.
Regardless of year, if you find a nice 3.0l, be prepared for some (not very expensive) corrective mods to the engine, to ensure a sweet running 4x4.
Just my view.

Thanks Davey, is my concern the engine or rust? coming from Land Rover I have a rust phobia. If it's got a good service history and minimal suggestion of rust, conditioning says it's a banker but I'm in new territory here. I'm sensing engine focus for the era I'm looking at, is that it? A newer 3.0l or a 2.8l if it has to be that age?

Morning Rusty!
If you find a serviced 3.0l with a bit of history to boot, then I see no reason why you can't go for an earlier 3.0l.
Knowing what I know about these trucks, I just wouldn't.
Make 2003 your earliest. As mentioned by Barrbeast earlier.
1. The Nissan changes to the ZD30 engine would have been done.
2. You'll get little or no rust issues (dependent on previous use).
3. Regarding modifications, you'll be on the same hymn sheet as others for
comparisons.
4. The 2.8 with its 6 cylinders is a smooth motor, but generally regarded as
underpowered for the Patrols bulk.
5. You shouldn't have to buy a rusty one. Your Japanese Supababe is waiting out there for you!

Keep talking Rusty, we're all here to help you make the right choice.
Best
Davey

for a 2000 or 2003 I think it's likely on most motors will need their sills welding very soon so I would say its fairly normal. There will be a few that won't but for the most they rot from the inside out.

Don't, there'll always be examples popping up, but don't buy a polished turd becasue you're in a hurry.
