I've started to get a hankering for a new project... I'd really like to make a Stealth Campervan.

I'f you're not familiar with the concept, its basically a fully functioning, self contained Campervan that looks like an ordinary van.

I've owned plenty of vans before... Even set up beds in them and used them like Stealth Campers. Spent a week a few years ago touring Castles in France living mostly out the back of the van!

I wouldn't have any trouble running two vehicles, as I'd probably just SORN the Van while I was building it. The problem is, I actually don't have the funds to put into it. :doh

I love my Patrol! I mean I Really Love my Patrol.... But this is something that I really want to do too! :nenau

I'd absolutely love a 4X4 Sprinter.

I travelled 200 miles to test drive one a couple of years ago... It was the newest shape, stunning! I knew I couldn't afford it, but I went anyway! :lol

This would make a good starting point!

Defiantly not got enough for this... The van I start with would have to be a quarter of this price at least!

Looks like a private ambulance though :lol

Are you thinking of mostly using it abroad?

You may be able to pick up a cheaper van if you by a Left hand drive.

Sure your son would love the adventures a camper would give and you could always buy a cheaper Terrano for the 4x4 fix.

Your Patrol is a mighty fine truck though.

Just remember 12v, 230v, and gas safety when you do conversion

I am in the process of doing something very similar.
I bought this, without the stripes and sign writing! Just plain white with black (brick proof) windows. Cost was pretty much 1/4 of of the earlier example shown on ebay. From here:http://www.forcevans.co.uk/used-vans/mercedes-benz
416 CDi Auto 4600Kg GW. Some good points: fully coach trimmed lined and insulated, decent Altro floor, two Eberspacher heaters a D2 in the rear and a D5 on the engine, and lots more work ahead......

Thats come out the blue!!

Do you think you will really sell the trol for a van project?

always fancied a conversion.

my parents had a m1 transit pop up roof in early 80s v4 auto. had a tourer and a static, but plan was to swap tourer for a cabin cruiser the transit could tow....

later my mum had a vw t3? swb high top. 1600 diesel na.

just after i passed, fancied a high top lwb twin wheeler bus to convert, later learnt of the county 4x4 conversions and thought could be heaven on earth.

wouldn't mind a 4x4 van that would be not much bigger than the terrano and be able to tow caravan too, have toyed with mitsubishi delicas, think there are some with conversion similar to a mazda bongo.

Make a bed and blinds for the trol:thumbs best of both worlds. Check out Torn Apart Self Sufficiency youtube channel. He has a great Land Rover Ambulance conversion, proper tidy but hardly urban stealth but wild camping very stealthy.

That's great! I have been on those sites before looking for bargins!

It's awesome that they come insulated and heated... Save a lot of work! :thumbs

This is a good suggestion... But it was these thoughts that got me thinking about the vans again! :doh

I could settle for this as a project...

It's not stealth, but I get to keep the Trol :clap and satisfy my Trailer urges! :naughty

Buy an old horse box trailer and convert that, nobody will think you are sleeping in a horse box, you might get stolen by pikeys though :lol

I do quite like this.

Never really thought of campers in disguise before.

That picture takes me back to 1979 when I passed my Police Van Test to allow me to drive the V8 Sherpas we had back then for the Police Support Units. Would seat 12 including the driver with full steel cages round all the glass.

They were quick in a straight line but lethal at the back end in the wet. lol

I really hope that the AA didn't write the "your in safe hands" banner.
Stealth camping rocks. Just do a conversion on the Patrol, it doesn't have to be too sophisticated.

Why would trailer need mud terrain tyres. Not like needs traction .
