So after speaking to Blocky he's on a 2004 3.0 LWB and paying the £300 tax bracket.

Whereas I'm paying the lower bracket of £200 something a year on both my 2004 3 litre and my 2004 2.7 Commercial SWB

Then I find this 2003 up in the high bracket again according to the subtitle of the listing.

Whats going on and how did they band the later Terrano's? Are we missing something or was it literally eaney meany miney mo that morning down at the DVLA? :nenau

I thought we had put this one to bed a while back.
As I understand the DVLA rules for VED/VEL duty/tax they depend essentially on the date of first registration and vehicle classification and later on they introduced emissions & Euro 4 & 5 compliant vehicles in the goods sector.

Prior to 1st March 2001 vehicles in the category known as Private or Light Goods cost £150 if under 1549cc and 1549 cc and over cost £245 for a year as a single payment.
This was irrespective of being diesel or petrol. Other Goods Vehicles had separate tax bands depending on Gross Vehicle Weights and the number of axles etc.
Our SL 500 was first registered in 1997 so costs £245 for the year.

From the 1st March 2001 until the 31st March 2017 all vehicle Diesel or Petrol were VED banded on emissions not cubic capacity. Some confusion arises as extra bands were introduced for vehicles registered on or after 23rd March 2006 these extra bands were K,L&M to tax the higher polluters. So if your vehicle emitted say 226 g/gm the VED duty is £520 if it was registered on or after 23rd March 2006 but only cost £305 if it was registered the day before as everything above band K is charged at the old rate as the new band did not exist.

After 1st March 2001 Light Goods Vehicles were separated from Private & Light Goods and not over 3500Kg revenue weight were Taxed at £240 with the later introduction of Euro 4 & Euro 5 compliant vehicles taxed at £140.
Our Jeep was first registered on the 29th January 2005 and emits 257 g/km and we pay £305 (It was actually £295 but has gone up since Jan 2017) even though it is a heavy polluter in band M due to the capping for vehicles first registered before 23rd March 2006 it is treated as Band K.

Our BMW costs us £305 as it was first registered on 26th March 2005 and emits 218 g/km (Band K). So we pay the same as the Jeep even though it pollutes less.

Extra confusion can occur due to the rates creeping up by £5 or more pounds at each budget so it's no good looking at what a mate might have paid prior to the last budget.

When looking at PLG / Commercial type vehicles it is important to check the vehicle Classification on The V5 and / or emissions depending on date of first registration.

Pretty sure both of mine say Private Light Goods Vehicle on the V5

What does yours say Blockmeister?

The 2003 Terrano will have had it's VEL based on emissions, there is no band for £295 so this will be a figure out of date or a typo.

I recently purchased (for a camper conversion) a 416 CDi T1N Sprinter, this has a maximum vehicle weight of 4600 Kg and a maximum train weight of 6600Kg. A1 LGV VED cost is £165.
Wonder if its possible to re-class Terrano as LGV?
I have no idea what the CO emmision figures are but the 5 cyl engine & auto transmission are pretty much lifted straight from thML270 which I believe is in the £500 VED bracket.......

Hi,

Depending on how your truck is defined on the body type on your V5 it may mean you have to drive to the lower Light Commercial Goods speed limits as it may not quality as a Car Derived Van. Depends on the Max Vehicle loaded Weight - truck, max cargo weight, passengers, fluids etc I think.
We touched on this during training today but only briefly so stand and expect to be corrected.

That's what I was thinking, if it says light goods then its lower speed limits.

This is a nissan 2006 press pack (could not find earlier) giving the commercial specs which puts the Gross Vehicle Weight at 2510kg so well above the 2ton bracket for a Car Derived Van.

Well above, I'm interested to know what they are classed as, and if they came with rear seats? Google time :lol

just looked at the V5:
Taxation class: HGV
Body type: Specially fitted van
Revenue weight: 4600Kg gross
Vehicle category:N1

No emmission figues quoted, other than it is LEV compliant.

Nothing else of any obvious significance, other than its an ex Met police TSG
vehicle.

now that sounds fun, is it a mwb with shorter rear overhang and twin wheeler?

any idea what it's kerb weight is as being over 3500kg gvw would be able to tow a trailer/caravan over the usual 7m max body length.

Its a LWB high roof.
Kerb weight: 2450Kg
Payload: 2150Kg
towing Cap. 2000Kg
max train weight: 6600Kg
OA length: 6780mm

So in theory a 2T trailer of around 11M length would be permissible, but that would also probably require an active trailer braking system too.
however as its only for two people and a dog I don't plan on towing anything at this time....

The ML 270 tax band is the same as my Jeep £305 this engine was phased out before the March 2006 cut off so all 270's are in the cheaper bracket currently £305. The later ML models with the V6 3.2 litre engine cost £310 but after March 2006 they all went into the £500 plus zone as did the later Jeeps.

To change Taxation Class to a LGV you would need the manufacturers certificate of conformity this is what decides the classification when the manufacturers issue the V55 document for the DVLA to produce the V5. I have had experience at work via the now closed LVLO where a used Mercedes was imported from Jersey so we had to obtain a certificate of conformity from MB Germany to produce a V5 with the appropriate emissions etc. The prices vary from different manufacturers some are fee most cost between £100-£500. That's in addition to import duty where applicable.

The vehicle manufacturer issues a certificate of conformity usually via a main dealer with the VIN number and original registration details these are compared with the original carbon copy of the V55 that have been sent from DVLA when they issue the V5 on first registration.
