Hello to all.

My wife and I are about to purchase our first Terrano 2 in the next few days.

Its a 2005 lwb 2.7l in grey. After looking for a while for a big car for the family we have looked at so many. We found one that suits our requirements.

It's not perfect and does in fact have a crack in the front bumper where the current owner was bashed by another car.

I have been trying to source a replacement front bumper but they are proving difficult to find.

Would anyone have any pointers on places to look (checked ebay)

Or the possibility of repairing it, is that advisable?

Anyway thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome. You've come to the right place for terrano/maverick information. :thumb2
Hopefully you've had a good look under the truck for rot. They are all known to suffer but if looked after, can be relatively trouble free.
There are also members fortunate enough to have more than one truck for spares, so finding a replacement bumper shouldn't be a problem:thumb2 Solarman is down on the south coast and will sort p+p. He is a trusted seller and we do have an agreement that we pay before he posts.
If you do purchase your truck I would also recommend paying the £10 annual membership so you can have access to all content on the site.
All the best.

Thanks for the advice. And will keep in mind about the membership too.
Once we get it will see about the bumper and if we can live with it or not.

Welcome aboard and you've made the right choice of car, had one since 2002. As said they do rot but nothing we haven't come across here so bags of advice. As said the full membership is well worth it, saved me a fortune.
As for your bumper, make sure you go for the later type as they are different shaped to earlier. Solarman is a great bloke to get bits from but I think his are all the earlier models but I stand to be corrected. I've used a bloke call ed CNCFABS, think he uses the same name as his seller ID on eBay. Have a search for nissan terrano spares on ebay his name is sure to come up and send him a message and say you are a member on here too:thumbs
You may also be able to fix the bumper once you get your hands on it.

Hello and welcome, try MJM4X4BREAKERS, they have their own web page and are on ebay but don't advertise everything, they have a few terranos in. Like jimsterrano said you will have the facelift bumper but if you are desperate the older shape rounder ones do fit I believe, oh and don't forget to post some pics of the truck up on here :thumbs

Thanks for the warm welcome
Will surely be posting pictures and signing up for membership ones I have the vehicle.

And again thanks for the advice on the bumper.
My mechanical and general car knowledge is 0 to nil.
But I'm lucky to have a good friend of mine who is a mechanic, he's worked for land rover/jag/Honda so hes always handy for advice and help.

You guys all see to know your stuff. Having spent a large part of today looking through the forums.
Think the chap max from Spains pictures of old Nissans was a great read and view.

I did want to hold out for a pathfinder. Just something about the shape I like. But when the Terrano was far more accessible money wise it seemed like the right choice.
My plan is to keep this car as long as I can.

Hope so, not afraid to get my hands dirty and have access to tools and possibly even my grandads old garage space, he's 89 now and is merc daft, was still doing all his own repairs until a few years ago. He drives an ex-ambulance that's converted into a motor home.

So hes always there for handy advice too.

Pathfinders have weak engines and suffer from thd chassis completely rotting through.

You say you're mate used to work on jags a L4nd R£#×%s, be very sure to tell him that your nissan is NOT supposed to leak, he may not be used to the concept yet :D:lol

I will do. To be fair to him he has always warned me away from anything land rover/ range rover due to his experience with them. He did his apprenticeship with a land rover garage when he was 16, in his 30's now. So has a few years experience and is a handy person to have. I fix his IT issues he does the motors that's how it's always been.
But I'd like to be more confident with them myself. Don't always like asking for help. I know I'm not going to pick it up overnight but feel I'm semi intelligent enough to understand the basics to keep the thing running at least.

Welcome.
Sounds like you have the friends and family advice to help buy a good one. So you will probably of already but have you checked the MOT history?

I know what you mean, engine wise the 2.7 is non destroyable, I have tried :D, just keep it serviced which is fairly easy, and keep an eye out for rust, you'll find lots of info on here about rust :doh

Yeah check the history and it looks like it's been fairly well looked after. So here's hoping I've found a diamond in the rough so to speak

So about to hopefully purchase my first Terrano today.

Having never bought a car privately should I be asking for a receipt or is it a waste of time? Anything else I should be doing?

Obviously sorting tax and insurance.

It doesn't hurt, just write something out with his name, address , reg and price on and both sign it.

Happy to be educated on this, but I'm sure that this is exactly what caveat emptor is designed for.
You, as the buyer, have the opportunity to satisfy yourself that all is good and if you have any doubts- walk.
A receipt will just confirm that the seller has received money in exchange for the vehicle, so worth it for just this. As a seller I'd want to make it perfectly clear when the buyer picked the car up, especially with so many anpr cars about.
When I bought mine, the dealer didn't have service history, but the car started fine and ran fine with nothing to hint at problems. In nearly 4 years there haven't been except for a flat battery.
Good luck and enjoy the car.

When ever I have sold a car privately which I not alot of times. I have always photo copied/written out two copies of a receipt saying sold by/to with the above info on it including date.
The other info I have also added was the time of selling. So if the person who bought it takes it for a excited spin and gets caught on a speed camera or two and I get the tickets I have a signed copy showing the time we exchanged the vehicle. Also works in reverse and helps protect them if I had a excited spin before selling.

I would always want a receipt of some sorts and with a time on it.

and finally the cracked bumper. Will probably worry about this later, and sort any other issues that arise.

Hey that looks good, black wheels suit it, the bumper doesn't look too bad, you should be able to affect some sort of repair on it :thumb2

I'm not a fan of grey black wheels but it's each to their own. A nice looking truck though, like the grey bodywork.
I reckon remove whole bumper, unclip the plastic cover from the reinforcement and then set too with the fibre glass to fix the bumper.

I like it. Don't worry about the bumper. Get some miles on it. Enjoy it for a couple of weeks and iron out any faults you find. Then if you still love it, get the bumper sorted. :thumbs

So drove to my mates last night from purchase and he gave it a quick once over and said it looked good.

Did about 25 miles last night without issue. It will be used daily for commuting until I get my company van.

Couple things I noticed, passenger visor is broken, doesnt stay up.

Is/can this be fixed easily? Or is it time to replace it?

Was just gonna get sticky velcro and use that to bodge a fix just now.

Couple bits are looking tatty, drivers seat started to wear a bit, gear knobs a bit grubby.

Drives nice, just need to get used to the gear ratios and sweet spots for changing etc.

Needs a spare tyre sorted and put back on the rear door.

Swap the gearknob for an earlier plastic one rather than the threaded up ones that just fall apart

Are those easy to find?

Been using it for work around Edinburgh today. Its not bad in the city.

Will pack the kids into it in the next few weeks and hopefully get the weather to hit the beach.

Hard to tell from the photo but if you are going to leave the cracked bumper for a little while it may be worth drilling a small hole at the end of the crack. This will help stop the crack from growing through vibration and friends going "bumpers cracked" then as they always seem to do pushing on it just to check their eyes aren't lying :)

I expect you know but just incase. Do not use the 4x4 on hard ground as the rear wheels need to slip when cornering so need loose ground to do so.
If you did not get the user manual then paying the £10 gives you access to one on here I believe....think it is there anyway. Others' can confirm...hopefully :)

Mind you think about oil and fluid changes to be on the safe side. Rear diff oil is a important fluid to keep in good order, needs proper Limited Slip Diff oil not gear oil.

Yeah all the earlier ones had nice rubber/plastic moulded ones and fare the abuse a bit better, the newer Terrano's seemed to have been swapped for a "stitch leather" effect knob, but I've yet to see a Terrano yet where the stitching hasn't started to unpick and the "leather" flaps about.

The later ones were bonded onto the shaft as well as screwed into the thread and are a pig to remove, I thought I was pretty strong but it took a set of grips to remove mine :doh Doesn't matter about damaging the old one as you'll not be using it again anyway.

New old one should just screw right back on :thumb2

As for the sun visor droop, you'll be better off replacing the whole visor as the part that has worn out is integral to the sun visor itself and cannot be swapped, get some pics up of your visor and I'm sure someone will have one that matches your trim :thumb2
