View Full Version : Rear awning solved, but...

I've been scratching my head in pursuit of a decent solution for mounting a rear facing awning on the ol' truck. The awning is needed as this is where the kitchen is.
I finally found out that these things have a name (http://www.campingworld.co.uk/en/gb/Kampa-6mm-to-6mm-Keder-Strip/m-14217.aspx) and bought some awning rails. I already have the awning with Keder strip.
Question is whether I should screw them straight into the bodywork (and test it out next week) or wait until I get a full roofrack made and attach it to that.
I'm impatient.

Make some blocks up and fit to roof rails

It's got roof bars and the rearmost sits over the rear doors, so will snag under the side awning.

Certainly is mate, and that's an alternative too.
I get the feeling that screwing the awning rails through the roof panel isn't getting a thumbs up at the moment. :nenau

Depends how water tight you can get it, would be bad to get any rust round that area. I think it would be high enough but you might have to have it sloping down towards the truck for the rain to run off.
It's a neat solution really, lightweight and easy too put up, the more I think about it the more I like it :thumb2

Here's the official version of the https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/be/camping-gear/tents-awnings/front-runner-movable-arm-for-easy-out-awning-2m-2-5m.html swing around awning arm (Fred's Arm).

I watched them vids and I'm impressed. Don't seem too difficult too build:naughty
Definitely need a full roof rack to fix it to though. :thumb2

Bloody hell Mark, that's a brilliant find, cheers.
All I need to do is work out what 40kg to remove it feels like.

Makes sense that the weakest part won't damage the truck in a high wind.
