View Full Version : Turbo differences in t2's
Stripping my spare 98 2.7 tdi engine down this eve I noticed it's turbo is water cooled like most turbos. But when comparing it to my 2002 2.7 tdi that one has no water Cooling. . Now I know if you can get charge temps down you get more power and the 98 engine used to be loads quicker than my 2002. So you guys with 98 models with round head lights do you have water cooled turbos or not as wondering if this has been modded or just the usual money saving economy when we got to 2001 onwards model

Water Cooled? You got any pictures of the differences?

Yes deffo water cooled to 98 (latest motor I have) just as likely the later ones are not as normal cost cutting on behalf of Nissan, but I do have to say, on the ones I have stripped out the very small water pipe was pretty well blocked, Rick

Will do.in morning bud quite looking forward to fitting this engine actually Just wish I could afford the manual pump

The 98 turbo gets water feed from a pipe under thermostat housing above water pump and goes to rear of the block near bell housing. My 2002 has non of that

While you have the engine out it will be very worth pulling the water pipes to the turbo and giving them a clean out, but have to say that the water cooling is nothing to do with performance gain, more to do with longer turbo life ie keeping the bearings cooler, Rick
Surely will help with towing the caravan

I did blow through them and seems nice and clear. I had a reciept from nissan that this was a new full engine from them in 2014 at 3500 quid and checking history it's done 5k miles since then hense why I'm gonna stick it in mine. As mine has a few issues. But this 98 went like poo of a stick and couldn't all be down to it being swb!
Are you still having temperature issues when towing? :nenau
I've pulled some heavy loads man with mine and the stat never moves

Water cooling to turbo will make absolutely no difference to performance, the very small water flow is nothing compared to the vast amount of air that is passing, the intercooler is the item that fails, it should be radiator sized in front of your engine cooling rad, now that is a worth while mod, Rick
Not really heating issues I've got a snapped glow plug and had a few atempts the removing it but it's stuck fast!! And getting a bit of miss fire on start up when it's cold out. Only for few seconds and runs perfect all day long. did have alot of rust come out of engine with a water change. its on 150 000 miles now and gonna be doing a lot of caravan holidays this year and it's a big van. I've got a temp guage on return of rad and up hill that rises pretty high and sure it shouldn't. Never over heated but it's giving me a few tell tell signs lately it's getting tired so rather than risk it it thought I'd chuck this fresh engine in

Fit the new engine, no problem, yes the return temp will rise when working hard but viscous fan should cut in to cool it all down, but viscous fan may be dead, when temp gauge gets above half way you should hear it cut in (roar) if it does not then the small spindle in the middle of the fan is probably seized, only option here is change the water pump, but maybe your new engine has it anyway in which case you are sorted, Rick
Have you fitted a new radiator by any chance?
I bought and fitted a new one last year but it's only a single core so does get a bit warm when towing.
I've made viscous solid so always fixed and yeah I did buy a new rad not long ago.

Could be part of the reason.
Once viscous kicks in it soon drops the the temp but still runs hotter than it used to.
