Well I started off by trying to retain my cherished number on-line but site said I would have to do it by post.

Form printed and posted so when I get the new V5 back I am in a position to sell the Chrysler or trade it in.

Interestingly the retention certificate now has a 10 year validity with a free option to renew.
A few years back they were valid for 2 years with a renewal fee of £25 I think it was so no rush to put it on a new vehicle.

The retention process is they say between 3-4 weeks normally so will see if they issue the original registration mark.

Retention or Transfer options

My terrano came with a private plate. Would I have to do the same as you've now done to keep it?

Ian

You have two basic options.

1) Transfer it directly onto another vehicle you own cost £80
2) Put it on a Retention Certificate so you can keep the number and have it later assigned to a different vehicle or put the mark up for sale cost £80.
3) As 2 but elect a nominee at the point of retention e.g. a relative.
4) If you sell the number to someone else you can afterwards name the new purchaser as the nominee. There is a fee for this it used to be £25.

Thanks for the info.

I've often wondered if you get the old number issued back or if it gets a complete new number.

Need to get mine switched over to my car but it's one of tjose Ron jobs, lateron.

I sold RUI 3686 that came with my Terrano and they then allocated LM04 CTZ back to it which was the original plate

Getting a number back ?

Mostly you get the original first registration number back except where the vehicle was registered as new on a cherished plate. When this happens you just get a number for the appropriate age of the vehicle. If you then put another cherished number on it when you come to part with it you may get a different number issued as the vehicle history is not directly linked to it's first ever registration number if you get my drift.
