View Full Version : manual pump conversion on late t2
I'm really gonna look into this with the intension of actually doing it if I find the right pump
Wd21 pump and make up pedal to take cable ?
I realise speedo etc wont work as all through ecu
What else is needed to be considered eg will wd21 pump work to start with

do not think it will work, ecu will not get any feedback from pump so will say eff off, Rick
But those pumps dont have ecu do they? Thats the point I wanna ditch all ecu crap.

should have a cable pedal lying around off a early terrano type if any use let me know and ill dig it out must be in a box somewhere early terrano were just basic mechainical pumps and would fit easier

i think ricks saying the ecu in t2 you will be fitting old pump into wont like it not old pump as t2 has ecu that does a lot.
I doubt you actually connect the ecu to the pump, will be all mechanical with a old fashioned stop solenoid that can be activated by 12v.
It might throw up some odd errors but the car would still run.

What would ya want for pedal as wanna start collecting stuff cheers bud
I will literally rip out all engine wiring and do basic set up start stop etc as just fed up with all ecu rubbish I know speed and revs etc will all need sorting but at worst ill use sat nave etc untill I sort that sort of stuff

Don't see why it can't be done, they do it on the Y61 Trols when converting to the 4.2 engine. Might need looking at by an auto sparky though if the ecu doesn't behave :nenau
There won't be an ecu as not needed if running mechanical cable pump. Same as 200tdi defender no ecu just on off and throttle

Your ecu does more than just work the fuel pump bud, there's the MAF etc as well.

I doubt the maf will be needed
You guys ain't getting this
With manual pump its just the pump that's needed no ecu no maff the pump is set to right air to fuel no crank sensor. Just warm the glow plugs and go! Early basic diesels

I have the TD Maverick, it does just as Madmark says:clap:clap
Twist and go
Have you got a picture bud of truck and possibly engine shot ideally pump
Have a search on here mark.Bud from New Zealand has done this to his mistral and im sure there is quite a detailed write up.
Failing that he is on the Facebook group:thumb2
Cool will do. I'm fairly confident ill be able to do this but finding a pump that's in my budget lol
Me and exosteve talked about this and his mechanical guru friend says it is doable.
Basically you are just reverting back to a simple mechanical set up.
Exactly bud. I'm hoping to have a late rot free never welded, ecu free terrano. Pretty rare beast

You may have emissions problems I am told by my MOT station that newer diesels have a much lower requirement to pass
One of the reasons for the electricary perhaps
Was it me you wanted to take pictures??? or Bud the NZ guy?

Emissions would be my concern to you need to find some one who has recently mot'd early terrano & ask mot centre if that figure would be acceptable for your year.
As far as I know diesel have smoke test not an emission test but with manual pump I can adjust them to run leaner for an mot

I'm with Mark, far as I know diesels are just a smoke test, not emissions.

Buy up an older Td with a rotten body or like my old one, thrown a head gasket. Then yuo'll have all the spare parts you need to make it work. Can't see you'd have any issue with the emissions, if you do, run it on veg oil for the week of the MoT, that'll get it through!
I could do that but ffew and far between

Guys, I've done several mech pump conversions on the TD27, Bosch and Zexel, as have afew others.
I'm not going into the gritty detail of the conversion on here again, PM if you want to know.
ECU and sensors all stay in place, everything works except the ECU doesn't actually control a pump.
Speedo signal comes direct from the gearbox. Don't start butchering wiring, you don't need to.

Hi,
If you draw a blank elsewhere, stumbled across this site a while back. Know nothing about them though. Good luck, sounds like a interesting project.
