Hi and welcome aboard, the engines and boxes are fine. Obviously better for regular lube changes.
Big thing to look for is RUST!
Sills
Rear seat belt mounting in the rear wheel arch
Boot floor especially under rear seats
Front inner wings
Radiator support cross member

Sounds like a lot but actually they are not as bad as I've made out, if you have to pay for them to be fixed it will empty your wallet for sure. Don't worry if the front wings are bubbled and rotten because they do and as long as theres no sharp edges won't be an mot fail, duck tape sorts that out.

Best place for cheap fixes and advice is this forum.

Good luck

heyup

yeah the engines are very strong and can do plenty of miles, same with the gearbox. Goes without saying though that good regular maintenance is what is needed - at 170k, if its running well, then its likely its been looked after.

Make sure the diff oils are done when servicing too, everything JIm says and yeah those drop links are a doddle - ive done mine without even taking the wheel off haha

I drive a 1997 swb 2.7 tdi, currently at about 187000 miles. Apart from the above described rust spots, neither me nor the previous owner had any trouble. Engine started fine last week, at -10°C after a week standing still :)
