Trols are really capable with just 2wd low and difflock...

So I met up with a mate yesterday afternoon for a session at the offroad site.

Thought the hub on the driver's side didn't "feel" right when I turned it to lock and Foxy just didn't seem to be conquering obstacles with the ease she normally does, for example, there's a slope just as you come into the site that she usually scampers up (Mr K and Paultrol will know the one I mean) but it took me 4 or 5 runs this time. I put it down to the way the site was after our typically Scottish summer but couldn't shake the feeling something wasn't right. After failing to get up another slope I've got up before without issue I had a check and confirmed my suspicions - I didn't have 4wd!

Turns out the driver's side hub is knackered and so I'd been running around the site with just 2wd low and difflock. Needless to say I got stuck twice and had to winch myself out/be recovered by my mate but the Trol did impressively well for having no 4wd.

Some pics of the winching action, I went straight from there into a mud pit that my mate had to yank me out of :rolleyes:

To be honest I hadn't even tried with just the single line! At that point I still thought I had working 4wd and since she was hung up on the back on the slope and buried in the front (I had to dig away some mud to get at the winch brake lever) I thought she must be proper stuck (all 3 ton of her) so I'd just popped the snatch block on as a matter of course to be kinder on the winch.

If she'd had 4wd she may well have dragged herself out :nenau

All good experience though Rob.
When I first did my body lift I couldn't get mine to stay in low box.I tried it on the drive and it went in so I left it.
First time out laning I put it in low but it kept jumping out so I did the peaks in 4hi and she went over,up and down everything in the way.

This will be interesting.... Do you think the modification to the standard hubs had anything to do with it as I've done mine now and im not entirely happy with how one side feels going from auto to lock but its always been a bit more wooly than the other side. I need to check to see if they are engaging properly.

What are your plans to fix, avm?

Yeh I've ordered AVM HP manuals (according to the Aussie's they're the mutts). I'll keep the working one for emergencies.

Severally doubt the conversion had anything to do with it as all I did was remove the auto bit so if anything they became simpler and more reliable. The hubs have had pretty heavy use at times and I suspect the leverage from using the tyre wrench has allowed me to be a bit more heavy handed than I should have been when locking/unlocking :augie I put the failure down to wear.

For what it's worth I've been running on AVM Manuals for over nine years on my Terrano and not given a minutes bother. OK I have to lock them manually but I can normally anticipate when I'm going to need 4wd so not a problem for me at all.

Thanks Jim, good to know :thumbs Yeh existing hubs were converted to manual so I don't have any issues with using manuals.

Cheers Paul, once the new hubs arrive it'll be pretty simple to swap out for the existing ones.

I've got AVM Manual Hubs on mine that I stole off that 99' I pulled in and painted :thumb2

They seem the dogs nuts, do you know what's happened to yours yet Rob? Be interested to see pictures of the problem when you finally get round to stripping them :thumbs

I like how simple the AVMs work, makes me curious as to how the OEM ones work now as they must lock up slightly differently. Couldn't see anything visually wrong with the duff hub but I know it definitely wasn't working as even "locked" I could spin the outer section around the inner section.

Yeh was good fun :lol although pulling a 3 ton Trol with no 4wd out of a pit was not very easy for a considerably lighter Grand Cherokee!

Have to split them for fitting, really simple in function. Black section has inner and outer parts, outer part bolts to hub mounts, inner part fits around and connects with the driveshaft, when unlocked both move independently. Silver section bolts on top and turning the switch on the outside of the silver section moves the cog into the black section and connects the inner and outer part of the black section together.
