Morning,
Off on our next trip, going to Scotland.
Never done Scotland before, want to go to Ben Nevis, Loch Ness, Isle of skye and ?.
Going for 3 weeks and want to go all the way round the coast.
Stopping off in Lake District either on the way there or back.
Its me, misses and 4 boys ( 4,6,7& 13). we're taking the sit on kayak.
Any one got any suggestions of must see places, good camp-sites.
we're up for a bit of laning if anyone's up for it (but not extreme, we got to get home) .
Any input grateful.
Cheers Paul.

There's no greenlaning up there, but there is off road pay & play sites (£25 PD), drumclog is a good one and suitable for all levels and you can camp/ park up there, look up Scotland west all terrain on Facebook & send them a message they're generally out each month or drumclog 4x4 folk out every weekend just don't go yourself. :D

I'm now in northern Ireland or I'd go with you:doh

Yeh like Mel says no greenlanes up here, there's general rights of access over all ground subject to following the Outdoor Access Code but that's only for walkers/cyclists and horseback, not vehicles. If you want to go on land with a motor vehicle you have to have specific permission from the landowner.

I pay an annual membership for a big offroad site near me but they don't do daily pay and play, just a year's membership.

Tons of places to visit and great scenery, especially up north. If castles are your thing there's a few of them eg. Edinburgh, Stirling, Glamis to name a few. Glamis is a nice one near me, right out in the middle of the Angus countryside and still the home of Earl Strathmore.

Thanks for input, looks like our off roading will be by foot. lol
Last time I went on a pay and play site must have been 15 years ago with our little Suzuki sj413 ... So maybe its time but not risking it with caravan to tow home.
Will probably do 2.5k miles towing on this trip.

Mel just seen your build your doing , Well impressed.

Just in case Sturgeon declares independance.
Don't forget to pack some Ginger Hair Dye and a man skirt !
Codpiece optional ! lol

I have only been the once to Edinburgh and we loved it especially the dry sense of humour they seem to have in abundance.

Went to a car boot sale flea market on a Sunday and some bloke in a Volvo nearly ran over the car park attendant in the field.

His response was not to curse at the idiot but he shouted out" At least I nearly got killed by a proper car "No a Lada "

Thank you, its maiden voyage will be back to drumclog and will be posted on here for any that wish to join.

If its scotoffroad that macbethical is on about you can have a bring your own day with tuition or drive one of theirs. First time I offroaded was up there, many great hints & tips learned :clap

Yeh it's Scotoffroad I'm on about ;)

Same price for the driving tuition as it is for a year's membership of the site, I've done it as well though not long after I got the Trol and as Mel says was definitely worth it.

Paul, if you are planning on being around Perth/Bridge of Earn way let me know and if I'm around you can always come out on the site with me in my Trol.

If you go north via the Lakes and come back down via the East coast. I'll gladly show you around the nice non scratchy bits if the North Yorkshire moors. There are plenty of places to land your tin tent. I live in Redcar at the mouth of the Tees.
Enjoy your road trip:thumb2

Newfy Hi just checked out that campsite, there's no room this weekend for Caravans so can't meet up but I'll phone them in morning to find out when they got some space.
Cheers for that Paul.

Patrolman Hi and thanks for your offer. We're doing the Lakes on the way back
but just the north part.Heard it's less touristy (coming from a tourist). So we can shoot across the other side and meet up. Would love to Troll the Moors.

Newfy. Thanks for that, is that the norm for Scotland because we never quite know what path we are taking so don't like pre booking when touring.

Cheers Paul

Hi it's not the normal way most places take a small deposit up
Front and pay the balance on Arrival
Glen Nevis camp is a tad different from the norm
Not really sure why but it's really popular with tourists

It would be good to show you around, dates are tight in august we are at Conniston for the weekend over the 16th and down with the Ely n crew in the peak district the following weekend. Just let me know when you think you will be passing and we can sort something out.

We're on our way.
We've had our problems, to start with the jockey wheel went Pete tong. A buggered bracket that took a few hours to bodge .
Then that evening the wife says "your exhausted was rattling when you reversed on to the caravan " so on Thursday morning I get under the Patrol to find the Exhaust swinging .
I get that welded.
We end up leaving at 10 this morning only 30 hours late .
The traffic was horrendous and we end up at our nights stop ln Molten near Scotch Corner at 7.30.
Now the water pump keeps fusing.
Happy days.

Sorry Paul, just seen your post. I drove north yesterday from Essex and it too me an extra 2hrs due to cap traffic.
I've got my dog at the vets this morning and work to do on my Troll for my few trips away this month.
Hope you have a good road trip.

Paultrol,

If you are planning on covering the whole coastline, then Sandwood Bay is a lovely quite spot, you have to walk in from near Kinlochbervie. Haven't been there for nigh on 25 years though, but I doubt it's changed much.

http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/sutherland/sandwood-bay.shtml

No ideas on campsites round there - based in Edinburgh myself. The Edinburgh festival(s) have just kicked off so this city is now completely mental and best avoided! I expect any campsites are busy/over charging just now too. If I had a driveway for the van, you'd have been welcome to stop here.

Hope you have a good time, enjoy the journey round and pack some serious midge repellent!

Arcascomp. Thanks for the drive way offer but even if you had a driveway you wouldn't want 3 screaming kids and a sulky teenager on it. Got your message a bit late as now in John O Greats and heading for loch Ness in morning and Cairngorms for camp. But thanks for the link. We will avoid Edinburgh .

Hi Paultrol,
Hope your road on/off trip is going well. Our pooch is not good and we have cancelled overnight stays in the lakes but will still have the day at Coniston for the swim this Sunday.
If your timing allows this Saturday is available and the fuel tank is full:thumbs
