View Full Version : Hi guys, back into a patrol
Well hello to everyone, my love affair with patrols started around 10 years ago in New Zealand when I bought my first 1989 GQ patrol td4.2 diesel swb, since that day I have struggled with owning any other 4x4 and always compare whatever it is to the patrol, I can't tell you what it is but I just love them, also had three Nissan terrano's, two 2.7 td and one 3.0 petrol. I did buy and sell a few patrols tidying them up and selling, also built a few up as off-roaders..my first GU patrol was a 1999 lwb 4.2 turbo diesel green over gold which I bought without seeing and had shipped to the North island from the South Island which was owned by the New Zealand earth quake commission needed a little paintwork doing but other than that really nice and well serviced. I will put up some pics and history when I have a bit more time...

Welcome daemon
Im sure with your knolage youll fit right in here.
Thanks guys, since moving back to the UK last year I have revisited land rovers which if I am honest are good but not great, I have a disco 2 and a bobtailed rangie which my wife is constantly moaning about stuff breaking every time we go out! I now know why they are called discovery because you discover something new wrong with it every time we go out in it.
Anyhow my new truck is a 2000 model patrol gr lwb with the ZD30 engine which I have always said I will never own, unfortunately if I want a patrol I have no choice in the UK. It has covered 131,000 and had a recon engine at 95,000 at a Nissan dealership in Oxford along with a new turbo, then had a recon gearbox and clutch at 120,000 at the same dealership, it has every receipt from new which amounts to absolutely thousands of pounds.. Also has a patriot roof rack at a cost of £1300 made to measure and a custom built cage mounted in the cargo area, which suits me for what I want the truck for..also came with new bf Goodrich a/t tyres x5, a 2"lift also a brand new set of shocks unfitted and a set of road wheels and tyres. So hopefully fingers crossed will be reliable and all good....

Read it properly Alex  he's got a Y61 ZD30 Trol like mine! Y60s were back in NZ.
Welcome bud :thumbs as you can tell I've got a 3.0 Y61 too although a bit newer (mid 2004). Have to say that has a brave ZD30 to go for as the early ones generally had all the issues but with a recon engine she'll probably be alright :)
Despite the rep, in my experience the ZD30 is fine as long as taken care of. As you probably know there are various wee things you can do to them to help out like fitting a catch can or blanking the EGR (bit more involved for the ZD30 to ensure you don't cause issues) - check out my project thread (in my signature) :thumb2
Welcoe from a GR Y60 LWB 2.8TD owner in SW France, out of interest where were you from in the North Island as my mum was born in Te Wairoa:thumbs

Yes brave or stupid bud!! Decided to take a chance though as it has the recon engine, it's basically a one owner car which was leased initially by the Oxford rowing club then was kept by the Nissan dealerships managing director until I bought it recently. It has a full stainless exhaust which (from what I have read) goes toward helping preserve the engine however I want the catch can and remove egr Asap but again from what I have read isn't straight forward and needs research.

Catch can is simple and won't affect the rest of the engine but EGR blank you need to either A) fit dawes and needle valves or B) wind out the VNT actuator stop a touch. It's all to stop the engine going into overboost as that can be lethal for the ZD30s.
I wound out the VNT actuator stop when I blanked my EGR and had no issues touch wood! It's changed the engine power characteristics a little but I like it :thumbs
Like I said, all in my project thread.

I've been reading your thread, very interesting, would also like more info on the aerial you have fitted, is it a cb aerial or radio..

The aerial you have fitted on the wing is the one I want to replace mine, where did you buy it from.
That arb bar was a lucky find.

It was just a CB aerial like this bud http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CB-Radio-Magnetic-Mag-Mount-Antenna-Kit-Centre-Loaded-70cm-Whip-4m-RG58-COAX-F-/321560914357?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4ade8629b5
I removed the electric aerial, cut the coax cable and used push connectors to connect up to the cable from a radio aerial like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Car-Stereo-Radio-Rubber-Mast-Wing-Roof-Black-Antenna-Aerial-/261546310096?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3ce55ff9d0
I used an appropriate bolt to connect through the aerial hole in the wing to the CB aerial :thumb2
It works well, not as good as the electric one but it's now far less susceptible to damage!
Yeh ARB bar was a very lucky find!
Does anyone in England do a catch can, Dawes valve and blanking plate kit ?

I got my catch can from Darkside Developments
http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/mann-hummel-provent-200-oil-catch-can-breather-system.html?page_context=category&faceted_search=0
I did a pdf write up on the other bits I used, but you may need to pay your £10 to get access to the thread containing the link (£10 well spent even without my pdfs :lol)
I just got my EGR blank off ebay (I also did a pdf on the egr blank). According to the Aus forums you should also fit a needle valve if fitting a dawes. Tbh I would just screw out your VNT stop (also covered in the pdf) instead of bothering with dawes and needle valve :nenau

Hi mate I am in burton latimer, yes I am in northants4x4 same user name. still have my rangie bobtail for laning/playing, would be nice to get out to do some lanes have to key something up and go. I've bought the patrol for general use but it will evolve into something else over time.. The zd30 has always been a bit of a worry especially as these trucks are not cheap but I love them and always have so took a chance regardless...
Lol, im in the exact same boat. The troll is the family car with baby seats in and the disco is for offroading although the troll is awesome :D that might have to change. I dont know whether to modify the family car or replace the disco with a swb troll ha ha.
Same user name on Northants 4x4 too, let us know if you fancy getting out and about although im quite new to the area so dont have much knowledge of the area unfortunately.

I would go swb troll or safari if I could find one at reasonable money, there is a good one on eBay but it's 4k for a 1993. I pretty much know the GQ y60 models inside out, they are a true solid 4x4 if you get a good body/chassis which wasn't difficult in NZ but for obvious reasons is harder here, landys are not that sort after in oz and NZ and have a small following 4.2diesel nissans and toyos are the main trucks for reliability..
