Hi all, go easy on me.

I'm not an owner yet but I'm planning currently in the research phase of a mega trip with the misses which will entail driving from the Uk to either India, Mongolia or even Tokyo. Still trying to decide as we have a few countries to visit in various trips before we do this one lol. I do own a Nissan 4x4 but it's quite a bit different lol. Cheeky R35 GT-R which I've owned for 3 years thus far and loving it.

I'm a proper petrolhead through and through and love travelling. The misses isn't fussed by cars but her real passion is travelling. So in the past we have mixed the two together which has equated to some epic trips. As stated I don't have a 4x4 yet but we have driven many on various trips over the past 10 years. Drove 1.5k in Ethiopia, did the length of Oman (man I love sand dunes!!), Alaska and a few more. So I'm no stranger to hiring and driving a 4x4. In Oman we had a 2011 land cruiser and for Ethiopia it was a y61 patrol.

We are at the early stages of planning but I'm keen to set my sights on what vehicle to get so I can start researching the prep needed. Not going mad and will properly do some of it myself to save cash. Anyway a friend owns a '90s patrol and I seem to have set my sights on a y61.

So I've joined your forum today with a view to gaining knowledge and insight from all your experiences. Gain so much from the GTR forum and know these are the best places to learn.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully I'll be an active member soon ; )

Welcome bud. Good choice of truck, love my Y61 Trol!

Check for rot in the usual 4x4 places. Rear wheel arches have an inner lip right around the edge of the arch where the mud collects. Nissan rad crossmembers have a habit of rotting - you'll need to open the bonnet and look down behind the grill to check properly as it's the part between the chassis rails that starts to go and that's the area covered up by the front bumper.

Early Y61s were 2.8td then they changed to 3.0td in 2000 I think. Avoid early 3.0td, the later the better but anything from late 2002 should be okay.

Main thing to remember is that these trucks are proper live axled offroaders that can tow up to 3.5 ton and so you need to look out for appropriate damage/wear.

I take it you need a photo bucket or similar to post pics here? Don't use one any more : (

I'll stick a link to my profile on one of the other forums

I am currently modifying a Patrol for a trip to Morocco later this year. Very happy with it as it is both rugged and comfortable. Having it back tomorrow after some work and really looking forward to driving it into the Brecon Beacons in the near future
