View Full Version : The Trol's pre-MOT test

Having identified a rotten rad crossmember that would need sorting for the MOT due mid March (welding isn't in my skill set so a garage job) I figured it would be worth putting her in for a pre MOT check to see what else was needing attention. It would also give the verdict on whether my lack of ARBs was going to be an issue with the garage! (Shouldn't be as she's clearly modded for offroading with the appropriate HD springs and shocks but you never know...)

Put her in on Monday (meant to post earlier but been busy) and the results were:-

-Broken rad crossmember
-Front brake imbalance (thought I'd felt her occasionally pull to the left lately so not a surprise)
-Corroded brake pipes n/s front and n/s & o/s rear

And that was it - no mention of the ARBs :thumb2

Pipes are likely just a wire brush job and imbalance a case of cleaning the caliper and pins but as she needs to go in for the crossmember anyway I just asked them to give me a quote for sorting the lot as they can do the MOT straight after.

Quoted around £320 + VAT for the lot which I'm reasonably happy with given the alternative to welding the crossmember was buying a whole new front panel for £500 and fitting it myself. Just got to wait until nearer the middle of the month to put her (earliest she can have her test) as the garage reckon they can probably do it in a day/day and a half.

I also managed to give her some proper air on a hump in the road while racing to a shoot the other weekend and although the HD shocks and springs behaved impeccably (VERY smooth landing with not even the slightest jarring) and there didn't seem to be any issues I figured the pre-MOT would likely pick up on any ill affects! :augie

Brakes aren't just there to pass an MOT, :doh you are driving a defective vehicle, the problem here is that you know it too.
Clearly not a problem if you are keeping it off the public road, however if you are involved in any incident, even no blame, and your vehicle is found to be defective then you will be the one in the dock.

Why do you need a replacement axle, if it's only the brakes?

It's OK I'm not using it at mo , no MOT :lol
I have a new axle for it anyway, (diff ratios and all that) incs bigger calipers etc
My jocular remark was that Trols only "need" brakes for the MOT as you say . Regular stopping is achieved using the car in front's bumpers :naughty

Had a look at my rad bit the other day, perfect no rust so that made me happy, however last mot mentioned corroded brake pipes so will get them replaced in summer and also need new front pads but will sort in july time for mot.

Kind regards

Russell.

I would try a wire brush on the brake pipes first bud.

To get the best look at your rad crossmember you'll need to take your front grill off as it's the section inside of the chassis rails that starts to rot - exactly the bit that's covered up by the stock plastic bumper and associated plastic bits :doh

I only first noticed the tinworm had started on mine when I had everything off to fit the winch bumper :o

I had the grill etc off as was fitting replacement headlamp washer pump so could see most of the cross bit, I will replace brake pipe as mentioned on mot and also the garage that lifted it said about a section on the back so better safe.

Kind regards

Russell.

Good stuff bud, you're obviously one of the lucky ones who managed to avoid the Nissan factory rust :doh
