Hi all had a very hard day today, last night and early this am we recorded 1.5 inches of rain, which has caused a lot of not so much damage but hassle, I have video but cannot put it up as running out of monthly gb, but for those of you that know my yard, (lots) let me say that it was streaming over my gate and the one foot board that runs along the bottom (10 ft wide) and then down the track running around 4 inches deep, it has done a wonderful job of washing all the mud a silt which comes down on a normal basis and now have bright exposed hard core and spotted tarmac, down side is my workshop was flooded to about 2 ft, covered my mig that was on the floor completely, remains to be seen if it is recoverable, it is not the water that is the problem but the silt that comes with it, when the water drained at about 2 pm I was left with one to 2 inches of silt on the workshop floor fortunately I had the help of two friends who worked tirelessly till 5 pm helping me clear it, the barn was also flooded but only to around 4 inches but it still has a layer of silt and as this is 45 ft by 25 ft and full mainly of stuff on the floor, it will take a lot longer to sort, the cause of all this is two fold, first the culvert under the farmers road has collapsed resulting in the stream flowing over his road and toward my gate which I had taken the precaution of fitting a 1ft board along the bottom to redirect the water back into the stream but today's deluge defeated that and it came over the top, second I have discovered a pinch point on the stream that would have redirected the water toward my workshop and barn any way, so I have some work to do to make sure this does not happen again, good news is the house was 4 foot above it all, I have had a wine or two and am now going to have a scotch or two or three as knackered, Rick

Ohhh, that's terrible Rick, if we can give you a hand any day, give us a shout, and as long as we are not booked up, we will willingly come down and help you move/lift/clean stuff up.

We only had 3/4 of an Inch here, but we are higher up, so a lot less hassle for us.

Ouch, not nice to hear that! Helped clean the silt out of aunt's house a few years ago, so I have an idea on what you are dealing with.

I hope you can find a way to tackle the cause of the flooding...

Thanks Clive and Pete, but we are fine, just have to take what life throws at you, silly as it sounds but I am really upset about my digital DC clamp meter that had been underwater for hours, it is most unlikely to recover and to find another as good at a reasonable price will be hard, angle grinder, jig saw, volt meter, cheap endoscope etc not so bothered about, regards Rick

Rick, take the battery out and give it a bath in clean warm water.
Then take it apart as best you can and warm air dry it.

thank's Alex but none come close, my one did two ranges DC 200 amps good for charging circuits, and 1200 amps good for starters, 1000 amps is not enough as the start surge will push it out of range, rick

Blimey, sound intense still.

Hopefully this work being carried out now will be a future proof preventative measure to ensure the water cannot reach your land :o

Fingers crossed it all goes well for you!

this is my gate, 9.30 Thursday am the water was running 2 inches over the top of the 1ft board on the bottom of the gate, the flow was coming from the right hand side as the culvert under the farmers road was blocked, with what was coming out from each end of the gate it resulted in a 2 to 3 inch layer of water flooding down my road, you can see how clean it is, not often it is seem like this,

the water level in here covered the yellow mig welder, have not stripped it yet to see if it will recover, my DC clamp meter has survived after stripping washing and drying still got lots of other bits of kit to test and sort yet, but priority is to get a couple of loads of sub base in and laid while the road is still clean, Rick

Crap dude that's terrible news....

Possibly a terrible suggestion but get the wood burner going in the workshop to dry all the damp out perhaps? :o

solarman216
12-01-2015, 21:27
not something I would leave burning unattended, and it would make little difference anyway, but nice thought, Rick

Is that an Oxford arc welder I see in the workshop?
I have still got one of those, still going strong

the blue oil filled jobbie, then yes (no name plate on it so did not know) fantastic stick welder run at high amps all day long, welded my 45ft narrow boat with that well over 200 mtrs of high amp weld, hardly used now though have little call for stick now, Rick

Sounds like the one, I will send a pic of mine later, I think it says Oxford on it. I have had it from new, not done a lot of work, I guess less than 50 hours, I bought it for a specific job, like a lot of stuff I have comes in handy now and then
