Sorry if this is in the wrong place, however being a newbie please forgive me. I currently own a 2001 Terrano 2.7 sport which appears to be suffering first thing in the morning.

When first start the vehicle it refuses to go even after 10/15 seconds of constant turning. I leave it for a short period and eventually the vehicle will start with a large plume of black smoke which clears immediately. If I return to the the car the same day the vehicle will start without any issues????

Is anyone able to advise me on what needs replacing etc. I'm thinking the glow plugs need a change however don't want to go through that if it's something totally different.

Many thanks

From those symptoms, it definitely sounds like the glowplugs, but if you own and know how to use a multi-meter, pop into the download section, and read the bit on testing your glow plugs, it's not 100%, but can give you a pretty good idea.

Do a search on here before you attempt to change them though, as there are lots of little tips like using a "T" bar rather than a ratchet to remove the old ones, as it reduces the chances of snapping them...

If you want a silly yet effective test, turn the ignition on, let the glow light go out, wait until you hear a click about 15 seconds in, repeat process 2 times, the on third ignition wait until glow light goes out, watch how easy it starts, if It is this will prove glow plugs (unless they are dead altogether) :thumb2

This is what I had to do when mine were goosed :thumb2

Don't get the tipped glow, plugs, make sure they are solid one piece as the tips break off :)

It may sound obvious, but are you going through the cold start procedure correctly. If so then most likley it is the glow plugs.

I really am new to all this pre start stuff. Is that the turn ignition until dash on, wait for 5 to 10 seconds and then start vehicle?? sorry.

The engine turns it just doesnt seem to catch until it has been turning for some time. The main issue is that the battery which is new starts to struggle after a short period and i don;t want to get in to the situation were i have to take the battery out to charge it etc.

Look for the "orange spring" light on the dash, when it goes out that means the glow plugs have heated, but even though the light is out the plugs continue to heat!! :naughty until you hear an audible click about 15/20 second later. I then turn the ignition off and repeat 2 or 3 times, this ensures the plugs are roasting hot by the time I crank the engine.

you should give this ago, it would confirm your diagnostic before you fork out any cash :thumbs

Right I have done all of the above and it is still having trouble starting. When it does eventually start a cloud of smoke comes out the exhaust and then it's fine. Run it for 5 minutes or so, switch off and go to turn it back on again and it starts first time without any issues??? I haven't changed the glow plugs yet.

Yep what Firebobby said, they are easy to change, the intercooler comes off with 4 bolts and loosening the jubilee clips for the air hoses.

Once that's out the way remove the "buzz bar" (metal arm along the top of the glow plugs) again only 4 bolts I believe, and then remove the glow plugs (inline front to back center of the engine)

****as mentioned if you have a T bar it would help**** sometimes they can he seized or difficult to remove so take care and make sure you loosen it off straight! don't twist it at an angle as you may wreck the thread :thumb2

When you fit the new ones, put some sort of grease on the thread and give the buzz bar a little clean up :thumb2

Easy job but take care whilst doing it. Good luck, if you get stuck let us know.

EDIT --- oh, and don't overtighten the new ones, hand tight with tool, then a nip up, don't go mad!

when doing work on the " buzz bar " .. might be a good idea to disconnect the battery to avoid " accidental shorting " :augie
