I'm planning to get a .223, .22-250 or .243 for pest control on our shoot, as a Christmas present. Currently using a 7mm Magnum, which is by far too much gun for a fox. And the sound wakes up the entire town :)

Me too,
I found the Bren had a good kick, mind, I was 14 years old at the time.
Moved onto the LA1A SLR, all while in the Army cadets :)

While you are at the range you are being observed and your opinions listened to. As you don't know everybody very well its wise to keep a cool head. Stick with .22lr for a while.
Hope your a full member soon. David.
Where's the pic of the score card, or did the wife beat you??

So you'll be getting rid of it eh? :naughty

What is it? Rife or lbr?

Definitively not getting rid of my 7mm, as it is very useful for deer and wild boar. Wouldn't dare to shoot a boar with anything less... It is a Browning Eurobolt rifle, by the way.

.223 will do you fine if it's just for fox mate. You won't need the extra clout & range of the 22-250, the rounds are cheaper too & you'll possibly not get .243 signed off just for fox. You'll need a mod' for it though. Even though it's 400fps or so slower than the 22-250 it's still a lot louder than your 7mm :D

Just my twopennorth :thumb2

.22's a great wee round, isn't it? And that wee 10/22's a great rifle. What other calibres are they giving you the chance to have a go with?

They seem to shoot everything, size not the issue but power. They all shoot 357, 44s some shoot various powder guns, one last week has a huge powder rifle with hex shaped bullets

They also "test" the antique guns once a month :thumbs

That sounds like an old Whitworth rifle.............

Have a go at everything they offer you, would be my advice? Enjoy yourself regardless though, sounds like great fun :thumb2

Forgot to mention I'm in Flanders, Belgium, not in the UK - so although (almost) no restrictions on calibre, moderators are unfortunately not allowed. Nor is lamping for fox, or using night vision equipment...
I was thinking .243 because it can do double duty for roe deer; .223 or .22-250, while legally OK, are on the very low limit of what's considered acceptable here for roe deer.

Ah, ok :thumb2

To be honest, unless you're chucking rounds away at a great rate of knots you can live without a moderator. NV & lamping's ok for fox & rabbit here, but not fro anything else.

Both .223 and 22-250 are more than adequate for roe with the right bullet though. I wouldn't want to use the likes of an accutip, but something like the Sako gamehead or Federal Powershok are great rounds & give you perfectly decent expansion & penetration. I've used 22-250 perfectly legally on whitetail in the states & they'll kill a 200lb buck with no worries about pass-throughs or blow-ups. It's a great calibre, especially if you need to reach out a wee bit :thumb2

Nothing wrong with .243 if you need something heaver though. Although I'd be seriously tempted with .260 or the famous .270 if you really need to go heavier. I've shot both (and own a .270) & can vouch for them both out to 1000 yards (Yep! A whole kilometer :D ) With either bullet you can go heavy and slow, or light & fast if you reload :thumb2

Target just right-of-centre, bottom of left-to-right slope on tree canopy, 4' off ground

Wind was right-to-left, gusting. 4 out of 5 rounds on target. AND that was with a Zeiss Diatal with #4 reticule........I was feeling pretty smug :D

And here's what a 130gr Powershok can still do after travelling 1000 yards & passing through inch-thick plywood. I'd want a bigger tree to hide behind! :lol
