I need some glow plugs for the Mrs motor as three have gone down, all the local factors can offer are Ceramic which I will not fit, it seems the Lucas LP079 is also ceramic so who does Metal ones??????? Rick

I ordered these ones, which say they are LP079's, but as you know, had metal tips.

The blueprint ones we fitted at work certainly looked solid (no tip as far as I could tell) :thumbs

If my memory serves me right :augie

The ceramic in these is very different, some how it is metalized in order to conduct electricity that is how they get hot, problem is the whole tip breaks away when they fail and there is no room for it between piston and head so it gets broken up and embedded in the piston, not to bad if it stays near the middle but if it happens near the edge the piston deforms, trapping the rings = goodby engine, I have one here just like it, Rick

NGK "CY" indicates they are Ceramic, Rick

OK well here is a pic of two types of glow plug, 1st on the left is a metal one by "Wega" not a good make as the one in the pic is one of 4 I fitted new only a year ago, and they bar one have failed, not because they have burned out (as you can see the tip is in good order) but they just fail to work, next is a good ceramic, and then two more ceramic after failure,

this shows where the tip ends up, you can see they just break off in a big lump, hence the similar shape hole in the piston, as time goes on it gets broken up smaller and makes lots more indentations and if unlucky, near the rings jamming them up as in this case, so now you understand why I will not ever fit Ceramic, three more pics follow this one, all the same engine, Rick

sorry that last pic was another shot of the same piston, but this one shows the damage the little bits do, this engine as a result almost ran away but managed to stall it, Rick

I just bought the same a Clive, looks like the last set as well, as he now shows no stock, odd as he only showed 2 to start, does that mean clive bought the other set? Rick

Just found another alternative, Champion CH 126, (good make) or Beru 921MJ. also a good make, unfortunately, as I am on a laptop on a dongle my search times are far too long to be able to get vehicle applications accurately in a reasonable time, perhaps someone on a fast land line can do this for me, and indeed any one else that needs a non ceramic glow plug, Rick

Oh fudge, just seen the piston pics, that's frightening. We should make a sticky about this, this could potentially write of a truck!!

I'm actually alarmed as to what plugs I have fitted now...

That is the sort of price the CERAMIC ones are, I think you need to get one out and compare it to my pics, Rick

Finally got round to fitting the new Lucas glow plugs to the Mrs car today as starting was getting slower, found 1 was not working, and decided to check the ones in mine, just as well I did as removed 4 good ceramic ones, they will sit on the shelf never to be used, refitted the 4 from the Mrs motor, and it still starts better than hers, so proving the the compressions are good also gave the turbo a rudimentary test, plenty of pressure to push my hand off the turbo outlet, now to order some more Lucas plugs for mine, Rick

I've got the same ones as you and Clive :thumb2

£40 for a set of 4, no engine damage for me :sly

Funny enough, my 04 Terrano was firing on the button but was very wobbly on idle when cold and puffed a lot of smoke, I removed all 4, they were intact ceramic ones and had all failed :doh

when you say failed I guess you mean they did not get hot, not that the ceramic tips had broke off, Rick

All the tips were intact but failed the multi meter test and failed the jump lead test as well, I used the Lucas ones from the Maverick, tested the Lucas ones in the same manner before I put them in and they were glowing red hot :sly

As an unrelated add on to this both my road going T2 and my off road Mav have Zexel pumps and the injectors leak off pipes are metal with the required curve in the pipe to eliminate stress, Rick
