caravans seem to be a popular theme at the moments so while we are on th subject, a few questions to mull over:
What is the best and / or worst caravan you have ever owned and why?
what is the best and / or worst caravan aid / gadget you have ever tried and why?
what are you best and worst caravaning experiences?

The worst caravan experience I've ever had was on the A1 north of Morpeth. I was driving A 44T artic northbound and got stuck behind a caravan moving at speeds between 35 & 40 mph at what seemed to be for hours !!!
Everytime I reached a straight bit of road to pass him another caravan was coming the other way
That was my worstist experience of a caravan
I bet Dinky can tell us a story about about having a caravan on the back!.

come on guys lets just keep this post open for the caravaners of the world, we seem to spoil all the caravan posts, and it just seems a little unfair
i too don't like them on the roads , but hey if that's there thing lets not knock it,
it should be a giggle reading how they have improved caravans with full size cookers, fridges , heating showers etc... so lets see if they have found a nice way to empty the toilet 8O 8)

hi my worst was seeing my caravan along side my escort one night just before it went into a headge . :P
not as bad as dinky though .
the best bit waking up in the morning looking out of the window and thinking im on holiday ,then turning over and going back to SLEEP.
THE FUNNIEST WAS when i was working away from home .
we were living in old sea side caravans while moving one from one site to another seeing a full set of body building weights coming straight through the front of the van so i just drove the CAT D9 DOZER OVER IT DUG A HOLE AND BURIED IT.

the chugging truck stuck behind a caravan reminds me of the happy hours i'[ve spent behind lorry drivers. one going 48 on the inside one overtaking in the middle doing 49 and me frustrated stuck behind them caravan in tow, not being able to overtake (as your not allowed in the outside lane towing)
or having them pull out and cut me up with no indicators!
or seeing them eating and drinking and wodering across the lanes and hard shoulders
or when you have to slow for a genuine obstruction driving 2 inches off the back end, thinking it will some how make you go faster when there is another slower vehicle stuck in front!
or etc. etc. etc.!
but these are by no means bad experiences just run of the mill every dya stuff you learn to put up with!
some good posts so far, keep tem coming!

 The funniest experience I've had of caravanin was watching Top Gear go camping  Totally top dollar
The worst thing was when my mate and his girlfriend woke up in one on fire
They got out with minor burns but major hang-ups :(
Only rented it for the weekend  and they didn't get their deposit back either

Yes that top gear episode is cracking, did you see this weeks one with trucks?
What is the best and / or worst caravan you have ever owned and why?
Worst - probably the first I had. An old Silverline that leaked rain through the roof, wouldn't reverse without having to jump out and wedge the reversing lever. A bit of a nightmare really.
Best - the Burstner we have now. The rear fixed bed layout suits us. It's got lots of bells and whistles. Everything works. Its dry and it tows perfectly.
what is the best and / or worst caravan aid / gadget you have ever tried and why?
Best gadget - probably satellite TV. Worst, most useless gadget- satellite TV when you pitch in a forest with trees all around and cannot get a signal.
what are you best and worst caravaning experiences?
Best - we went away to a farm site in Penrith on a UKCampsite (UKCS) rally. A mate and his better half came too with their van. We consumed a large volume of red wine and dark rum - and got totally bladdered. It was a great night. Later, I felt rather poorly and later still had an odd dream about someone shouting about feathers.
Worst caravanning experience (abridged version) - the morning after getting bladdered in Penrith (or was it afternoon), I discovered that the someone shouting about feathers in the night was in fact SWMBO. I later learned from her that whilst the Lunar van we had then had been in storage at a farm site in Royton, it had a small visitor or two who apparently enjoyed munching their way through part of a duck feather duvet. Most of the remaining duck feathers now covered most every surface in the caravan. Needless to say, I was on the pointed end of a few choice words about waving the duvet around during the night. It's not fair though, is it? You cannot really expect a drunk to understand about duck feathers when all he's really doing is trying to keep his share of the bedding.

Myself and gf had a bad experience with a tent, sorry we can't afford a caravan yet lol. It happened while staying at the billing aquadrome for a week. I was inside the tent, gf outside sunbathing whilst I cooked dinner. I turned on the gas for the small 2 ring cooker and lit the ring that I needed, unfortunately I didn't see the hose had dozed slightly, thus making it burst under pressure and of course it burst near the ring that was lit sending a flame straight accross the tent and right in my direction. Lucky for me its a tall tent and plenty of room to move with 2 doors and I was able to Stop Drop and Roll as I singed my chest hair, lucky I was not wearing a t-shirt. I was able to turn the gas of at the cylinder and only lost a small amount of chest hair and a few blisters and had to suffer the laughs of my GF is she nearly wet her self. lol. Since then the hose has been speedily replaced and the cooker stand has been reinforced.

My worst experience was some 15 years ago in Newquay Cornwall. We had borrowed a relatives van and during the night I needed to get out of bed and remembering that the light was directley above me and only at arms length away I proceeded to fumble around in the dark to turn it on. As it was pitch dark my eyes were wide open straining to get any light they could, I touched the light fitting which promptly fell straight onto my eyeball! One trip to casualty later...
Best was before we were married and decided to do a "John Lennon" for the day!! Apparentley we missed a nice day outside...
Well here goes as a few have commented,as im a stickler on servicing of car /van on time when req etc.had van and car serviced 2/3weeks before we went on holiday in Devon/Somerset with a Group of friends. Also whilst away we had our 25th wedding anniversary.Friend wanted a site miles fron anywhere so picked a site called Halse farm in the middle of Exmoor. That was biggest mistake i,ve ever made as accsess to it was horrendous.Anyhow back to the story after A fortnight away 2nd week was in north Somerset coming home at a steady 60mph all the way up till the end of the m42 as i had noticed the time and worked out if i slowed down a bit by the time we get home local chippie would be open so get some dinner then unload van.Just passing turn off to Donnington on the a42 lost the plot doing approx 55mph going up a slight gradient next thing i know im going backwards in the outside lane van leading the way.Jayne had time to phone the police and tell them we were having a accident and location before it came to a crunching stop.Van on its side at 45 degrees unhooked itself from car and put tow hitch through back window of our cavalier.Road was closed for 4 hours whilst they sorted it out,Ian has a few of the photoes so if he wants to post a few to show damage. The lenth of car/van combined was 8ft longer than road was wide no damage was done to front or back of car or van.Still to this day cant explain what caused it all loaded correctly ,not speeding ,no vehicle faults on either. going uphill so weight is at rear.Good job both had been serviced as i said earlier had no problems with insurance payout from either.First vehicle to pull up was a undercover police car .Best part of caravanning both coming home safely.JD
As a footnote passed the same spot a few times and never give it a second thought. Also had blade type stabaliser and basic alko hitch.

worst ive had was a jacknife with an exhibition trialer about size of a 14
foot caravan. went to collect it with a twin wheel transit van with jaw and ball coupling.
trailer had eye type. had no nose weight and had to force it down to get it in jaw slightly.
open road about 40 mph, sudden snake and trailer is seemingly alongside transit. stopped,
changed undies and carried on at 20 mph from harrogate to darlington by old roads,
not a1! one slow trip. damage one cluster on transit and my pride.
after we fitted it out guys came down from glasgow to collect with a hilux,
commended them on their forth coming bravery hoped they had plenty
of sweeties for the haul.
on a site in dorset pitch was that steep didnt need rear steadies and front
lowered to extreme and blocks. handbrake hard on all week and car parked in front,
in case! at night...didnt sleep well.
too many good nights to recall, personally love with it throws it down and it wakes you up,
but sooo snug in sleeping bag.
for what it is worth
My parents took us kids and I am 50! all round england and some of europe (France, Switzerland,Italy.) towing a caravan with a ford transit 6 seater. We saw the most fantastic places I loved my holidays. My parents are now in there 80's and are still towing a caravan  Bet thats got you all worried
Thinking of having a caravan site here on my land just a small one up to 5 vans or so.
Where do you all stay what do you look for in a site :?:

The best? Managed to get 3 weeks off work and toured Spain and Portugal with the van. Stayed on non brit non butlin style sites. Fantastic.
The worst? Getting stuck in a car park in plymouth (or was it porstmouth) and having to reverse with about 6 inches spare each side for several hundred yards (yes I had been following the ***** ******* ******* attendants guidance in) doesnt half focus the mind 8O

We're self contained apart from our electricity dependancy (seeking help for that :P ) so it comes down to a balance of location (as in scenery) and cost.
The cheaper we do it the more often we can afford to go away ie most weekends. We're in the caravan club and use their listed sites. Theyre usually on farms or tucked away on someones estate and cost between £5 & £10 per night all in for us 2 , the awning & 3 dogs. We always have electric & water then whatever else on top.
One last weekend at York had toilets, showers, outdoor swimming pool (at other times of the year!) and a massive non public estate for a tenner a night.
We did pay £14 a night on one a few weeks back, forgot to ask in advance how much, and felt robbed
Thanks for the reply
We have water and could put up a toilet/ shower block. We have lots of animals to keep the kids amused and a 3 acre fenced grass paddock. Lots of fresh eggs to collect for breakfast  . Will get intouch with the caravan club thanks for the info Its nice to know what people look for in a site

Hello Willow,
When your giving free weeks holiday remember who started the thread
I dont need electricity or anyhting fancy either!
We have some land we use for our horses and chickens that we like to stay on with the kids and have no facilities there at all, so have to take all our water, and run a small generator for a couple of hours in evenings to watch a film and charge the batteries.

If only I had a caravan I'd bring my Choc Lab down to say hello but alas I'm between vans at the mo
BTW my worst exp in a van, I'd been to Whitby and had a wet week in August. with a soaking awning in the van there was a small valley on the way out of the site and sure enough I met white van man coming the other way. Me being the curtious victim I let him through, but i did manage to give him a little wave twice  . However doing a hill start with a heavy awning in a 16" Swift didn't really do the clutch much good in my 1.6 Primera. So the year after we bought the Terrano so that it never happened again.
My best exp, seeing my young kids having a great time in our second caravan.

Best caravan holiday I remember was when my Dad said come on kids lets get lost in the highlands of Scotland  and we spent 3 days way up in the highlands next to a loch fishing and running wild It felt so free and it was magical. Went swimming in a fresh water lagoon (Freezing cold) and our only company were sheep and the odd deer. We dined on trout we caught in the river wonder if you could do this now? Plank we too have a caravan in the field and in summer we spend more time in that than in the house. Lots of BBQ's whatching the animals  Ian we are at Holme-Next-Sea. Jim get a van your dog would love it  I will let you know how I get on with the caravan club. Happy caravanning
Best holiday as a kid ,was just down the road from you Willow at Thornham.Fishing in the small harbour and swimming in the sea.
Yes its great here for a day on the beach lots to chose from ,my daughter and I used to get the canoes out and explore the salt marshes and paddle over to scolthead island then have a picnic, great way to spend a day. Thornham is great for flounder fishing just paddle the harborough at low tide and flip them out with your hands
Worst moment caravaning was going down the motorway and a lorry over took us at speed and dragged the back end of the caravan round so we jack knifed how my father got us over to the hard shoulder none of us knew :!: :!: the traffic behind us slowed everyone down while my dad fought to keep control the lorry was long gone  Very scarry. 8O
worst experience our first van a cheapie decided to start leaking when we had just got into bed...damp night! needless to say few tubes of bnq silicone and a few months later it was gone abi award, second worst just bought our present vanroyce van and still had a pajero, van was pristine pajero was diesel and we brought it home via the lake district A roads the pajero was a little smoky one black van later the paj was on its way
best getting the troll to pull said van effortless cruising just have to watch the speedo have caught myself at 75 before now and a 2 week stay in devon this year awning barbeque lots of wine lots of corona, no phones no idiots no work no worrys just me n the wife having some quality time, great site good loos etc all for 16 quid a day what more could you ask.....

toe rags been in garden kicked fence down, caravan window open.
yep fence is fire wood, was old and rotten but a boundary before.
2 of 3 vans doors tried to be gemmied? dont know with what but
plenty of dried mud in frame area, locks held up so ripped full window
up on sprite split it in 2, left wide open but no thing missing dont even
appear to have climbed inside. moved ed pir sensor on flood light so
wont fire, tried to smash gates open, failed even thou only locked by
pound land chain and padlock.
thinking more vandalism than theft, late running mischief night maybe.

Public flogging then a day in the stocks for them...scum bags. OR make them drive a caravan for a week then they would really know the meaning of public humiliation!

Kids I guess, nevermind if they catch the little souls I'm sure there will be a do gooder to defend them and then take em to the seaside as a punishment. If they get taken to a theme park they know they have really been naughty.

out of next doors garden, were trashing her fish pond...broad day light!
then came back and marker penn'ed by garage door, tho dont know if
they know its mine or not. mrs shouted them off. then got some long
range pix. bobby been round got incident ref and number for local guy
that may identify em fingers crossed.
Why not introduce them to off roading when they catch them
Like take them out into the country miles from no where just on dusk and tell them to walk back, don't forget to give them a helping hand on the way
Does the wheel falling off my trailor tent on the M5 count?

Worst experience camping with Plank.
Best experience leaving the site:lol
Worst was going on a holiday rally with the SOC.
Got on the M56 when the Carlton fizzled to a halt with a faulty head gasket after I'd had new valves fitted.
Waited for breakdown to tow us to the site in Wales and got the car fixed there.
While on site one night we had a real storm and I was sat holding the awning down dressed in nothing by my shreddies while my wife got a few friends to help us repeg it.
The following morning was horrendous - nearly all the tents in the separate tent area had blown away and there were loads of tentless folk wandering around and a few of the 'vans were wearing their awning like a hat.
Top cap it all off we had a plague of frogs/toads under the awning groundsheet - you could see it moving there were that many! The kids had a great time scooping up bucketfuls (bucketsful?) of tiny little frogs/toads and transporting them to the river :)
Best ones were the Christmas/New Year rallies we spent with the SOC. A great crowd of friends.
Yes folks, if you own a Swift, join the owners club. They're a great bunch.

what we need is an independent judge to nominate a winner, though it may not be apermanent title as new experiences are out there waiting for a victim, and memories can be jogged :thumbs
Worst Van old, really old Ace ambassador, leaked n rattled, but seemed like a good idea at the time.
Worst caravanning experience,- went down to Home Farm at Edithmead Somerset, a good all round family site, not sure if its still good not been for a long while. a good time was had me the wife and at the time 2 lil uns. until the last couple of days. What seemed like a monsoon came, the rain was lying on the field and came over the top of your shoes. Stuck it out for as long as possible, not easy trying to keep the kids amused all day with Force ten from Navarone coming at us. Decided to pack away n go home. reversed up to the towing hitch, hooked her up, but wouldnt pull away, that much rain come down car was just spinning (pre T2 ownership). unhooked, by this time soaked through to th underpants. attempted to pull the van manually to the side to move the wheel to drier ground, started to move her goin well then lost my footing, ended up on my Harris with the A frame of the van coming down hard on my shins. large gash lots of blood and even more rain. Trip to the A & E of the local hospital. Then having to travel home after a land rover puuled the van out, with the good lady wife towing (never done it before) me in the back leg elevated
The missus panicking all the way home.
Can honestly say, wiil never forget it.

thats got to be a contender for one of the best! :thumbs
Ok here you go.
2006 having a little tour around eastern europe we had picked a nice little site to stay at in Slovenia. Pulls up there late on on a Thursday night around 9ish to a very busy site. Go's to the reception to sign in hoping for a pitch and after some interesting language barriers she books us in and but asks if we find music ok.
Music I ask. and after another few min of articulated conversation I get the gist of a live rock band being on the next night..
Well I goes back to the wife and says live music tomoz all for free sound fantastic.
We gets up the next morning and the very full site is now very empty in fact just us and three other vans are left by dinner. And the three adjoining field are starting to put the stages up real big set ups. Now i'm starting to wonder how big this gig is.
We go and get some lunch and come back a few hours later and there a few hundred kids around but behaving ok. Look a bit weird for rockers but hay when in Rome.
Anyway with in a hour it starts but it ain't no rock band it's this modern weird shit all these peeps have whistles and floresent bangles. Loads of short skirts though and tight tops.
We take the kids and the old folks who had come away with us for a stroll around the fields and gets the gist that it ain't our cup of tea music wise so goes back to the van.
Around 9ish it starts to get a little busy the music get turned up a notch or twenty and the partys getting it to its flow only around 6000 people at this time.
Ah well the wife say it will be over by midnight no ponit watching tele as we had to shout to be heard at a distance of one pace and we were a good 500mts from the closest stage.
For entertainment we watched one of the kids lightweight footballs bounce along the floor on it own accord due to the thud thud thud vibrations. I swear the caravan moved 4ft by the next day.
Ah well it carried on past midnight then past two, then past four then past six Then finised at 8am.
Having no sleep at all I thought sod it i'll go to the loo went outside to see 100's of folk spread about all over the field sleeping. After seeing the state of the bogs I thought we had best leave so we packed up and moved on..
The girl at reception gave us a little money back and asked if we enjoyed the show apparently the one that night would be bigger.
I have to say appart from the noise there was not one bit of trouble and all the folk behaved no one person came near our unit.
That was the first at last rave we have ever been to but we did it in style and comfort. How many folk do you know who take their van to a rave..

On our way to yorkshire with caravan...have a blow out on the van luckily have spare so husband changes it. Just about to pull of M1 i suggest we get diesel as gauge is on the red....''na na got loads in there'',says the husband...pull off the M1 2 miles up the road, run out of fuel...husband walks 5 miles to nearest garage..luckily gets a lift back with a local farmer...then have to bleed the system....get to campsite late...wake up following morning to another flat tyre....this time husband changes tyre on campsite with lever bars (always prepared for everything my husband).
One week later we were coming back from Yorkshire (Holmfirth area) Sprite musketeer on the back.......just got on to the M1 about 9.30 on a Monday morning....Caravan has a blow out....
Luckily as usual husband has a spare for caravan too.....so there's him trying to change the near side wheel...meanwhile i have to brace myself against the caravan because every time a lorry goes past it's rocking like a good un !
Probably the most scariest thing i have experienced on the M1. We haven't been back up there yet........

Muzz,
seen several ravers on sites as in raving mad. Always wondered about doing say
Glastonbury but thought would be all tents though seems plenty do take RVs or
'vans.
Best rally was CC National '05, looking to go this year somewhere in Leicestershire
I gather so easy run and cheap compared to regular sites on a bank holiday.
