Ok guys, currently on the lookout for some part worn 235/85/16 tyres for the Wales trip as I would like 32" and although my General Grabber 265/70's (31") are fine just now, Wales is obviously another month and a half's worth of wear away.

Ideally would like a mud tread but have found a guy local to me selling 4 235/85/16 mixed brand AT's. Two of them are not really of interest, 5mm and 4mm tread and two different brands, but the other two are BFG AT's in good condition with 7mm tread. He's looking for £60 for the lot.

Having had BFG's before I know they are really good on the rough even in AT form. Was thinking that at £60 it's too good an opportunity to miss and I could snap these up for the fronts then find a couple of mud tread tyres for the rear.

The price seems good but for me a 235 width tyre seems far to skinny for such a bit motor as the patrol, off road i'm sure a 235 would be fine but it's the on road handling that worries me.

265/75/16 is the other option but I was thinking given the diameter increase (32" up from 31") 30mm narrower might be better as less chance of rubbing etc. Plus once I'm offroad 235 width will cut through the crud better.

I've never owned a troll just driven one into the garage so don't know first hand what the road holding is like but yes just 30mm can make a big difference to the road holding & braking performance but on the other had your right tall skinny tyres are better off road if the conditions are muddy as the tyres cut through the mud & grip the base rock but if the conditions are rocky your better off with a wider tyre as there is more surface area to grip the rocks it's, a mine field when it comes to picking what size tyre to go for:doh If you drive both types of conditions i'd go for a tyre size that in the middle.

What about mixing the tread types front and back ie. AT front and mud back, any issues there that you can think of? :nenau

I'd try and go for a wider tyre if it was me.

Sometimes a narrower tyre won't make any difference if there's nothing below for it to grip.

IMO I would be inclined to keep to factory size or slightly bigger. I had tyres that were 30mm over standard width size before my current tyres and you can deffo tell the difference. So I would not want them 30mm narrower. Just my opinion :)

Bigger is better:thumb2 265/75/16 minimum on a troll. I bought ( not brought) mine with 265 70's and handled well on the motorway and high speed bends. since then never been that fast.
upgraded to 265 75 16 BFG muds and they are great, they do like to lock up in the wet under hard braking, on the fronts.
Now got 35/12.5/16 Creepy's and it looks the dogs:sly
just bought x2 37 / 12.5 / 17's but need some suitable rims to fit the Troll.
if I can find some rims I may consider selling the 265/75 muds on the black alloys. or even the Creepys:doh

A bit rarer on the availability is the often missed 255/85/16 tyre size.
This keeps the width sensible but is slightly taller than a 265 / 75/ 16
