heres one lane local to me.
I took me os map to a lady on a farm and she said oh that must be gipsys lane over there it is but its only a path you cant drive it:augie in the same breath she said well it is a lane though:D
say no more. I got a lot of go faster stripes for my efforts
remember just because the OS maps says it's legal to drive does not make it so.

yes its on the map as a road.
I did one or two others that were suitable for any vehicle.
then I came across one that obviously hadn't been used for a long time.
I didn't do it as I was alone. it was a deffinate might get stuck jobbie.
so I walked it.
the first 20 yards were a quadmire very muddy. after that it looked untouched be even walkers.
I had an old dude come out moaning ive lived here 60 years its not a road? its a bridal way.
I had proof in my hand it was indeed a road.
I didn't take pics of that one:o
there will be a lot of pics coming from this direction now I have all the local maps:D
No what I mean is, if it's saying it's a road on the map it might not be. So it might be a bridleway.
Only way to find out 100% is going to the rights of way department at your local council.
Also check trailwise online, Should be fairly up to date and right 99% of the time.

what do you mean?
im new to this.enlighten me please.
I was following the green cross byway marks on an upto date os map.
there was no signs up saying otherwise.
the next door neighbour if you like said yes it is a lane?
but I got to the other end to a securely locked gate.
I had to turn around:(
there was also some buildings at that end that definatly were not on the map.
has this land been hijacked by a cheeky farmer?
so why ( I need to know as I don't want me truck taken away) could I have been breaking any laws please?
You can't go 100% by the map, As some lanes would of been downgraded or closed. The maps may be a 10 year old or something. They should only be used as a guide.

Poxy govt laws a few years back restricted most of the old "Green Lanes" So there may be a right of way on the map but it may now be closed.
The only answer is to ask your council to check the routes you want to do against their "Definitive Map".

ok. I had this chat with an elderly chap.
I backed down and reversed out.
but I don't understand the politics of this.its either a road or it isn't.
its on a map clearly marked as a road.theres no signs up saying otherwise?:nenau:nenau
im slightly confused.
obviously I need to learn before I start leading a group.
this is all very new to me. I thought it was like walking.
green crosses road.green dashes footpath?????
im stonned its something to discuss when I see you cant wait

Thats right, it is or it isn't but the map could be old and wrong.
Don't think they have to signpost it to say it's closed for motor vehicles.
For instance, a greenlane was marked as a restricted byway (basicly motor vehicles not allowed) on old os maps around here. Which was wrong, It was a greenlane open to vehicles. Only recently has OS updated it. Just shows you can't take the OS maps as gospel.
Your better off joining a local group and learning which lanes are open or checking trailwise online.

I don't like p n p days they bore me after an hour or two.
I don't want to depend on following the leader all the time as its not fair to let the same peeps put all the effort in all the time.
if it means ive got to frig about taking documents to the council before I even try go down a lane then I give up now and want a cheap 30 quid a year to tax car.
check trailwise online will likely be right 99% of the time. Also join a local group. Most will have info on lanes if they are legal or not even if they never drive it.
http://www.trailwise.org.uk/gmaps/gmap.htm
You only get a 3km search area for non members, click the area you want to check. Say middle of the lane or nearby. Click search. Then click search 3km around xxxx

tbh if it only looks like a path, probably best to give it a miss.
hardly tread lightly making your own track.
byways, boats, tend to have signs saying so, red arrow on them.
bridleways have blue arrows, footpaths yellow.
also restricted byways = bridleway at best.
rule 1 dont go alone.

Hardly a sign anywhere round here apart from the top few lanes. Some lanes the signs get nicked.
We've been on some awesome lanes that were so overgrown you couldn't walk down them. Bit of research later we had them OK to go and had a day out with chainsaws and strimmers :naughty Nothing plain in this stupid game of hunt the lane :o Similarly there are lanes the Definative map says are good to go but the farmer doesn't :( Then this happens

I wish there were more open lanes across Cannock Chase, a few years ago, I "accidentally" found myself on one of the logging lanes.:augie
They run for miles. :augie
Some areas have wooden poles as a barrier with a padlock, some are open, and lead to car parks, others are just access points for logging, BUT there are no signs, so how do you know which is which? I was tempted to try one yesterday, as I knew that 99.9% of the time it was closed as I live close by, but to a visitor...
They could find themselves "locked in"
They used to hold 4x4 open days for 4x4's, led by the forestry commission, for a fee:doh
There are very few lanes in Staffordshire...
If I could guarantee no scratches or body dents, then I would try more.

Now i don't exactly follow correct procedure however, the solution would be to get the telephone number you need to confirm this lane is driveable, then go for it :D
One long woody lane i went down a few months ago got stopped by police about 20 mins after we drove down, some landy guys going the other way met up with me later on and said they got done for it, regs taken and photos taken :doh
Maybe a section 59 coming their way? (strike one)

Me n missus and the nephew went out for a laning day 3 weeks agoish. We stumbled upon a logging lane, i put on the Wellys and walked it first.
Just as bloody well!!the ruts were horrendus, thick quicksand style mud, i myself got stuck many times, took me about 35 mins to get back to the car!!!
They were getting worried about me :lol

Ahh but... were the Wellies road wellies, or all terrain wellies, or did you have mud wellies on.
We have been told that good boots make the difference...:lol
Mind you, you were only in two leg drive...
What did you expect:...
I bet the deer or rabbits had no problems...

So Makeitfit, whats's with the Gaylander rear door, with the automatic lowering rear window, like the Freelanders have...:nenau
How low did the glass go?
Boot floor or on the mud?
:lol:lol
So what happened to the glass to cause this?

I quite like the lowering window escape hatch idea:D I had a Toyota Hilux that had that :thumb2
My rear window smashed as a result of whiplash
That was the CB aerial whipping the window . We think it was one of those odd days , the track surface was extreme and the trees were a bit low :augie The end result is what you see above :doh
I've now changed the "whip" aerial to one of those fishing rod type ones. Hopefully that'll stop it happening again. Live n learn :D

Not always, Many areas where lanes are short they tend to be forgotten and become overgrown so no users can use them. Also signposting is hit and miss depending on the council in your county. In west/mid wales there are no lanes signposted, Tread lightly have signposted the main lanes around here.
