Hello... Newbie here!! (Key fob!)

Hello everyone,

I have just bought my first Terrano 2 (2001) and I thought that this site looked really good for someone who has to (for financial reasons) do some of their own spannering and mechanicking.

This is my first 4 X 4 and my first diesel.... First impressions indicate that the vehicle is going to be fine for caravan pulling, which is also something I'm also hoping to be new to!! One pesky fault I'm going to have to sort is trouble with the key fob/remote/central locking.

Welcome Tonup!!! not been here long myself but site full of helpful people and useful information... make sure you have a look at the 'downloads' section if you fancy getting the spanners out!
Hope the 'Tonup' title relates to weight of caravan rather than anticipated speeds... 8O

I got two remote keys with the car when i bought it, but the second hand car salesman was a crafty blighter and made sure he had the doors unlocked ready for my test drive when I met him. How helpful!!

What he omitted to tell me was that the both keys won't operate the remote central locking, and both are in pretty ropey condition with the rubber buttons very very worn. Anyway with the spirit of 'caveat emptor' I have accepted this and will be more careful next time.

Both keys will manually unlock the vehicle and start the car, but this causes the hazards to flash until the engine is cranked and running, which is a bit of a nuisance to say the least when loading three wet dogs into it :evil:

I have sent the key away to a guy on ebay who specialises in refurbing them and recieved it back today. When I get home from work tonight I am going to try it without attempting the reprogramming trick first and then with it if unsucsessful.

I'll let you know how it works out.

Hello Tonup, Welcome to our club.

Looking forward to your answers tonight as my hazzards flash until its started and also the gauges go up and down and everything gets reset :evil: , (Milemeter, clock ect).

The key repair man has a link on our site somewhere with a couple of quid discount, Not a fortune but it can all come of your yearly membership cost.

I would try reprograming the handsets 1st & you can find how to do this in the down load section on the home page :smile: I can lock mine with the handset but have to unlock it with the key as the button has died :cry:

Hi All,

Just a quick follow up to confirm that the refurbished key worked perfectly.

I took it straight out of the jiffy bag pushed the button and the central locking functioned exactly as it should. This is a bit of a relief as I thought I might have to pay a dealer to sort it out.

Below is a link to the guy on ebay who refgurbished the key. He was very helpful when I spoke to him on the phone before sending it, and he turned the whole job aroound in just a few days...

Has it cured the hazard light problem, and if you only have one key does that mean the motors of the road for a few days?.

It has cured the flashing light problem.

I only had to send the plastic fob section of the key to him, and I don't know if you can start the vehicle with the key with out that part on it, but you could try it before sending it. I don't think it will cause the alarm to go off, but I'm not sure...?

Alternatively he will sell you the repair kit, which consists of new buttons, a battery and new microswitch for around £7.50 + P & P. I can't do fine soldering and I didn't want damage any of the other components trying it. I guess you pays your money and takes your choice (as they say).
