When we Bought this house 13 years ago the neighbor had walled across a shared drive and built a big drive in the center of his frontage. So after parking in the public car park across the road for 9 years I thought it was time I sorted it out and built my own drive and Garage.
I had to get permission and sort out with the neighbor regarding his half of the 4m width Then it was possible to start work.
First thing was to knock down the wall and get a dumper in to move all the earth as it was to be built in to a small bank.

After marking out the area, my mate Graham came over with his mini digger and started to dig out for the foundations,(Confused looking dog for scale)

just started resurrecting my shed/workshop today. I aint got a digger though.
did a couple of skip trips and dug about a tonne or so out by hand ( well shovel).
got a fair way to go. the concrete block compost bit at the end is going I think and I will put a door through to my greenhouse. It will then be made more weather resistant and have a bench or two as a workshop

I have nothing against manual labor but even the mini digger straggled with the ground.
However there's something reassuring when you live on the edge of a clff that there is nothing under you but ROCK!

Soon realized we weren't going to manage to dig any strip foundations so decided to go for a raft ,thickened at the edges

Would be nice, when I worked at the university, we had a pit that was 2 car lengths long, and had stairs down into it. We also had a chain hoist on a track girder, that ran the full length as well... I miss working there...:lol

Blocks, sand and cement delivered and some 2x2 and sterling board for the shuttering.

jonela

Made the shuttering in sections 200mm deep and drilled 12mm holes every 200 mm then pined it down with 12mm re bar and leveled up

Are you using a DPM under the concrete base

jonela

Dpm was fitted inside the shuttering , but due to the road outside being to narrow and one of the main roads through the town it was not possible to block it with a cement truck . so it was necessary to mix all the concrete for the base by hand  I divided it up in to four bays with more shuttering and fixed them down with re bar pins and inserted re bar connecting rods

Three sections of raft completed but couldn't resist the urge to start laying blocks . the blocks are standard blocks here 20x20x50cm with built in perps ,just butt and fill. There will be three windows, a 3mx2m garage door and a door in the back.
