Hi, Just upgraded from a 2.7 terrano (still sitting on the drive) to a 2000 W reg 3.0TD Patrol SE+, Unfortunatly with an auto box!! I tow an industrial 2.5 ton box trailer and need advice on how to set the auto box to tow for best fuel economy.
i.e. do I use overdrive on the motorway?
set to hold,AT, or power.
2 wheel or 4 wheel drive.
O my this thing has so many buttons on the dash!!
I wanted a manual box but a 2000 (W) 3.0TD Y61 with 95K for £4,000 I'm not going to complain.

never driven and auto, but a good rule of thumb is dont use 4wd on a hard road it wears thigs out and wastes fuel. I hope this is of some use
PM davemud, he's got an auto and tows with it.
As plank say's don't use 4wd on tarmac or it will end in tears.

Hi brianpaul
you wont find any problem towing with the 3L Auto I tow my 1800kg van to Spain and back every year and my 2tone Work box trailer round the south with out any problems
Having both owned autos in 3.0L Terrano and Now 3.0L Patrol I would recommend you change the auto fluid and then agine at 60k Intervals to a synthetic fluid
As for driving style just run as you would normally I leave power on the auto selector and when running around on building site hold in 1st and 2nd gear as i have been told this locks the torque converter up take a look at this site will re-assure you i am sure. You will also see some upgrade should you wish to beef the box up (I am looking into this at this time for my patrol)
