so far I have done a2" body lift and put 31s on.
me mates goin help me with me front torsion bar lift that just leaves the rear 3" lift to do.
Its already a struggle to get me ladders on and off.
I have to climb the a ladder up the side of the truck to fasten them on.
ive worn most the paint away on me truck now:eek:

When ive done the next lift for the maximum full 5" lift and put 33s on, I will either need a caravan step or summat.

We also need extra storage for camping gear and veg oil:D

so my most pressing mod is the roof rack and im thinking of askin me mate who owns a fabricating shop make this:D

but before I put me hand in my pocket I thought id ask for opinions.

its obviously got to come within the a reasonable weight limit as its fixed to standard roof rails.( I had the lining out to try and figure out how to reinforce the rails in earlier posts) not really doable.
it only has to carry 2 sets of ladders. a bucket(I only just thought of that ( another hook somewhere))
and when were camping it needs just to carry the light weight bulky stuff.so we can fit the dog in.

the roller at the back of the rack would be for leaning the ladder against a bit of a lift and drop down to hook on the front bars of the rack= easy transport with out locking ladders on for short distances.

the a ladder hooks at the side are to save me keep putting the seat down and chucking them in the car.
the mesh plateing is for good all over hooking points.
its got to be 4" wide for sheets of ply mdf n stuff.
and im thinking a good sturdy over boot canopy to keep the blazing sun of me while I cook oat cakes.:D

How about making new fabricated roof mounts instead of the roof rails. So try and get a fixing point nearer the edges of the roof where it curves, ie the stronger part.
That'll also allow you to mount the whole thing lower .
As for the rear sun shade  what about modifying a gazebo like the ones in BnQ. The poles it comes with could be made to fit in the end of your roof rack

Use a big umbrella thing for the rear, can also be used off the truck also.

Agree with Pete on the mounting points.the standard roof rails are only rated at 50kg.
Good idea though mate.:thumb2

For the canopy, rivet some awning track to the roof and get a piece of curtainsider material made up to what you want.
Slide it into the track and hold it up with tent poles and guy ropes. Brass rope hole rivets for the tent poles to go into. You can buy tent poles exactly for this job.

I just got a tarp and had some small carabena's on end of roof rails, clip the tarp and either held up with tent poles or guyed to a suitable tree. Great little shelter and cheap as chips.
Got a friend with a landy with one of those roof racks that you can climb on to. He's mounted one of those roller blind type canopies to the roof rack, great but costly.

Have you thought about having removable side mounts on the rack for the ladders then the roof rack could be a more basic basket style which would poss be better for your camping needs.
I made up a side sun awning for my old disco from some old gazebo polls & a large tarp it worked ok but TBH it really needed some sort of framing at the edges for when the wind got stronger than a breeze:doh

Going to use the same tarp but bungy cord it to rear side doors & boot door as that can be locked in place once open & use one pole so can cook under it when it's raining

too flimsy.

I want it dead simple. thought about fold out arms instead of inserts.
it must be self supportive.without trees or poles and a clip on side wind protector could be fitted.

ultimately I want a fold down cooker stand inside the back door for doin me emergency rations:D

That might be hard to build well not hard but it could end up being costy as you'll have to use alloy due to weight anyway know it's another forum but it might give you a few ideas :thumb2 http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forums/showthread.php/41393-Awnings Expedition Portal is another site full of ideas & great builds like off road trailers (some day i'll build one):thumbs

just had a quik look on ebay.
second hand racks 400 quid:eek:

I understand weight is an issue. I aint got a clue what my proposed idea will weigh. my engineer mate will put me in the right direction im sure.

but it deffo seems a better option to make one from scratch rather than adapting a second hand one.

and yes I even thought of an omnistor awning:D

can your mate weld ally?
I had been toying with the idea of making one from ally to keep the weight down but need to get a price on material.
I wanted a full length one but have yet to come up with any designs.
when we where camping last year there was a landrover with a full awning on it.
he adapted a small caravan awning to fit onto the side of his truck.

I fitted an Omni store on my van I had.
I wish id taken it off before I sold it.
once the next lift is done there will be plenty of head hight to fit one.

can he weld alloy?
ive done a few plans and will nip in for a brew and a chat when I get chance.

And while im at it im going to make some wooden templates for some rock sliders.
they will clamp to the chassis like mels do. so to fit you will have to have a body lift.
I will also work out a price for these for anyone interested.

Pic of my awning.
Old tarp a ratchet strap a few glass tent poles and an industrial mat, and a couple of bungys
There is another glass pole out of sight, holding up the centre running front to back near the crab on the bungy, another couple either side would stop a bit of the sag
http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w628/kitchenmanuk/awning/20140310_150542_zpsd44063f9.jpg
Ratchet strap sewn to side of tarp and hooks in wheel spokes
http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w628/kitchenmanuk/awning/20140310_150550_zpsa3bd9112.jpg
Pretty crude but does the job, as I am only 5'8 plenty of head room

Cheers kitchenman as that is a bit like the idea I have in my head on how i'm thinking of doing mine to make up a dry kitchen area when we go camping with our small tent as it's to small to cook in

I also have a gazebo, I can just about drive into it, the roof bars miss the frame by a nats, I think it cost around £20 or less from Tesco.
Next time there is no draft I will rig it and take pics

im not thinking of setting up camp.and don't want to be faffing about much.

but you know how it is when you fancy a stop and a brew. its a bit drizzly or inclement.

ive got the ideas.just got to see me man about getting it started.
but at the mo its third on my list of prioritys

how about one that fastens to the inside of the door and pulls out as you open the door.
no faffing about and instant shelter.
don't ask me how it would be held in place, just thinking out loud:lol
