Get the standard two bolt ball one.

Not the 4 bolt ball one

For your model, ie later than " S" reg, your tow bar MUST have EU type approval, with the gold EU approved tow ball.

Just bear that in mind.
Anything else will be illegal.

Is this something that they check on the MOT now?
I know they are supposed to check that the electrics work, but have no proof of this.

Yes. Tow bar has been part of the test for at least a year & 13 pin (but not 7 pin!!!) electrics are also now included. NB! that if electrics are not directly accessible eg. behind a cover then they are not tested. I am also led to believe that if a 13-7 pin adaptor is fitted then they will not be tested as this would require removal of the adaptor which is not allowed.

As several 'continental' wiring loom set-ups, to my knowledge, have already failed because of the incompetently spect. testing equipment (despite being legal!!) I will be fitting my adaptor, in 2 weeks, just in case. I never like to give them any excuses to fail it LOL.

Why not the 4 bolt ones ?

Less accessories available, bike racks, stabilisers, drop plates, mostly bolt between the ball and the tow bar.
Not many designed for the 4 bolt type.
