hi, just aquired 2 pairs of very pretty zebra finch, was wondering how hardy they are in these winter months? have a covered aviary 9ft by 12ft for them to flap about in. cheers, mike.

TBH i'm not sure how hardy they are but I used to keep lovebirds outside all year round, I built a large cage inside my shed with nesting boxes etc & had a sliding door so I could lock them in of a night or during the day if the weather was very cold. I ran an electric greenhouse heater in the shed over the winter to keep the temp above 8'c but I also insulated the shed to help with the heating cost. During the winter they were allowed out into the flight from about 11am-3pm so they could have a good fly around but they could always go back in when they wanted to. The funny thing was they loved playing in the snow:lol One thing I do know about zebra finch is you have to careful on the size mesh you use as they can be very good at getting out

I used to keep them in outside aviary with a shed for indoor cover. How open is your aviary ( open front with closed back and sides) you could make a small box type shelter in there for them which should be ok as they are pretty hardy

thanks for replies. i think i will mount a cabinet inside the aviary as suggested to offer some shelter from draughts etc, somewhere safe for them to roost of an evening. hope the chickens dont mind these little fellows bouncing about above them , thanks again.
