Explain? is this a punchy fight or a 4 x 4 one, Rick

Barrbeast

Punchy... all fighters start off as a novice and get trained up to go three 2 minute rounds against one of the others of roughly equal weight and ability.

It's one way to shift the extra Christmas weight! :doh

Yeh I thought that myself! I'm not sure if those are up to date as the latest number is 17 of us signed up including one girl and there's 18 guys on the website...

Cheers bud, like I said will keep you all updated :thumb2

No need to sign up, there are plenty of pubs in town on a late Saturday night, first come first served.:lamer:

As Rick says, I too have no great interest in any type of fighting, but as a fellow member, let me wish you all the best.

What is it they say... "Break a leg" or is that in acting and filming.

Maybe the term should be... " Break a nose" :lol:lol:lol

Good Luck.

Cheers folks :thumb2

Haha rustic I live in Dundee and used to be in Young Farmers so am aware that's always an option :lol I try to behave myself when it comes to that though... I get enough bruises and knocks working on the farm!

I've already had my nose broken... first time it happened my Mum did it!

Yeh AlexD333 there are a few rugby players signed up to it so far and they are packing the pounds, I know from personal experience though that the kind of training we'll be getting will melt away a bit of that weight! When I started training 2 years ago for the various long distance obstacle courses I've done I weighed in at 106 kg and eventually dropped down to a steady 95/96kg despite getting physically bigger.

As part of my training I joined the boxercise class my mate runs and he was merciless so I should at least have a basic idea of stance and how to throw the punches. Long as I don't get knocked out and give a good account of myself I'll be reasonably happy, but I am going to go in aiming to win my bout!:D

I like the look of it, but would not have the nerve to do it (I'm to old to risk an injury would be my excuse). Nonetheless it looks like a well organised event, and I guess you will be using head protection, so good luck with it and the cause it supports.

Regards

Alan

The very best of luck to you, from my experience in kickboxing the majority of people only enter contests when they know they are going to do well, normally by saying they are not as good as they really are.
Think fitness is going to be the key, if you can keep your stamina up then it will give you the best chance. Dont forget that the adrenalin which will be running through your veins will zap your stamina just as much as the boxing.
Expecting regular updates on the training progress.

Thanks lads :thumb2 and cheers for the tip kickboxer, will definitely bear that in mind :)

Updates will be forthcoming... training at the club starts on 20th but I'm planning to start back on monday morning with my running, press-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups and dumbbells routine - having a goal helps a lot!

What he said, the other thing to remember that punch power and being like a brick outhouse don't always go together, so don't be fazed by being in with someone who looks like a greek god, listen to your trainers, keep your hands up (nothing makes me want to scream more than a boxer with his hands down) and try to "live the life" in the run up to your bout, it might only be six minutes but it's the longest six minutes of your life.

Okay folks thought it was about time I posted an update!

Just finished week 3 of training and about to start week 4. From an initial 30 that signed up we have 20-24 regular attendees (the week past was the last week for new starts so I think they'll start being harder on regular non-attendees now).

Week 1 was an eye-opener, range of body sizes, shapes and fitness levels... but none of us ready for the intensity of training! (I knew it was going to be hard as on chiropractor's orders I'd not trained for 2.5 months, but bugger me it was an awakening - sweat was steaming off all of us!)

Fight night training is Monday night and Thursday night and since that first week, on the recommendation of the trainers, my mate Jamie and myself have been attending a couple extra boxing club sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays and we're both really noticing the difference. One or two of the other trainees have come to a few extra sessions too although not with any regularity :nenau which is a shame as I reckon I'm starting to see a bit of difference - Thursday night we were in three groups switching round training exercises which included a session on the bags while getting watched by one of the trainers and everyone except Jamie and I got corrections on our bag technique which I'm taking as a good sign!

Anyway I'm loving the training and feeling a lot fitter already and as I guessed, I'm in the heavyweights at 96/97kg. When we started out I was knackered after 10 mins of bag work, on Friday i did a whole hour on the bag and was still ready for a session of circuits at the end of it :)

I've actually been getting a bit more bag/pad work than everyone else after a slight misshap at the first training night of week 2... first session of light sparring, opponent was a new trainee on his first night, noticeably heavy handed and flailing around like a madman. I got in and decided to forget the little bit of training I'd done previously and just give him as good as I got :doh we each traded a few hooks to the head and blows to the face then I stupidly dropped my guard a little and stuck out my chin :doh:doh CRACK! A blow to the jaw which rattled my head

Apparently I swayed forward and almost went down before straightening up and raising my hands again. At that point the trainer called me over and looked at my eyes "you're dazed mate, go and sit down", and that was pretty much me for the rest of that night. Managed some slight bag work but the mother of headaches was starting to appear by that point. Long story short I was told by the trainers no more sparring for two weeks in case I had concussion, hence extra bag and pad work while the rest sparred - I'm itching to get back in the ring! :lol Tomorrow nights the night...

Anyway thought I'd finish on a couple of photos (sorry they're topless by the way - don't you lads with sidesteps go getting any ideas!:lol) Oh, and as I'd thought the photos on the website are old ones. We've all had photos taken but I don't know when they'll be going up :nenau

20 January just before heading to first training session.

07 February after my Friday boxing session, things are just looking a bit tighter and trimmer.

It's alright you don't have side steps :lol

So you don't have to wait two weeks for concussion right?

So you don't have to wait two weeks for concussion right?

I've been able to do all the other training but not spar in case I got hit in the head again (and had concussion from the being dazed). It happened near the start of the training session two weeks ago tomorrow so I'll be fine to go back in the ring tomorrow night :D

Just don't get too "trigger happy"

You wanna be like one of those refined well trained hidden snipers.

He waits and waits and then boom! One shot finishes the day .

Also the less you flail about the less the other guy will be able to judge you.

Good point, well made bud :thumb2 Tbh with the bit of light sparring I've done before I knew enough to know better than to flail about like I did a fortnight ago :doh I was just too keen to get down to it and didn't think

We'll see how I get on tomorrow night - sods law we don't do any sparring :doh
