well all I am sat here with a nice scotch, having a chat on here, it is pretty blowy outside but no rain, surprising for January it is 10.2 C outside, in here it is 23.7 and the wood burner was let out yesterday morning, the only sources of heat are two small dogs, two adults and cooking, and I suppose a laptop a cctv system and a couple of low energy lights, so all in all well happy, and dry, which makes me feel for those pore people washed out of their homes by the floods, mostly I blame the planners, they do not take account of drainage systems full stop, plus new estates remove the soil absorption aspect, never taken into account, rant over, enjoy, Rick

You've been making me think actually, if we get this artic weather from the states with all this water about can you imagine what would happen?
Another issue is with people now paving over their front garden to get there cars off the streets.
Instead of the rain water soaking into the ground, it now runs off either into the property drains or the road, either way it ends up in the rivers.
Building on flood plains... enough said, also building walls to protect properties alongside rivers, just causes more problems up and down stream.
In the past the flood water would flood the flood plains, and absorb excess water, by only increasing the water level a foot or so over a huge area, thus preventing the water backing up, as it can easily flow into this area, and by also reducing the water going down stream.
So would you buy a house in say "" Watery Lane" or other places that hint at the area being flooded.?:nenau
