View Full Version : Christmas, a nice mathematical quiz.
How many presents, in total, were given in the twelve days of Christmas?
On the twelfth day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
Twelve drummers drumming
Eleven pipers piping
Ten lords-a-leaping
Nine ladies dancing
Eight maids-a-milking
Seven swans-a-swimming
Six geese-a-laying
Five golden rings
Four calling birds
Three French hens
Two turtle doves
And a partridge in a pear tree
Lets see who is the first to get it right.:thumb2
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, to all on the forum, both members and visitors.:thumb2

364
12 drummers drumming
22 pipers piping
30 lords-a-leaping
36 ladies dancing
40 maids-a-milking
42 swans-a-swimming
42 geese-a-laying
40 golden rings
36 calling birds
30 French hens
22 turtle doves
12 partridge in a pear tree
Two correct answers, two wrong answers so far...
So which one is right, 78 or 364 ?
:nenau
3-2 so far, but which is correct? 78 or 364 ?
On the twelth day you have:
12 + 11 + 10 + ........+ 1
But on the 11th day you have:
11 + 10 + 9 + ..... + 1
On the 10 th day you have:
etc
etc
On the first day you have 1
Add them up and...
Simples...
Adds up to 364, so virtually 1 present for each day.:thumbs

78 definitely, without doubt (but I may be wrong!) Bah humbug.
I'm firmly in the 364 camp :thumbs
Just realised that you have already given the answer :doh
Something for our friends in Australasia,
there are several versions of this song, but I particularly like the...
Five Kan ga Roos
Merry Christmas to the guys down south, who are enjoying their longest day of the year, as we are enjoying our shortest day. :doh But we know that are days are getting longer, the nights are drawing out, as your days are now getting shorter... :lol
We are really jealous that you are basking in summer sunshine.:thumb2:thumb2
On the TWELFTH day of Christmas
My true love sent to me
Twelve parrots prattling,
Eleven numbats nagging,
Ten lizards leaping,
Nine wombats working,
Eight dingoes digging,
Seven possums playing,
Six brolgas dancing,
Five kangaroos,
Four koalas cuddling,
Three kookaburras laughing,
Two pink galahs,
And an emu up a gum tree!
All the best,
