Hello people went to look at a 3 litre terrano today not a bad motor only problem is that its automatic and i am slightly worried that if i put the caravan on the back that the auto box is going to overheat and go bang. Anyone got any experience of these gearboxes

I have a 3 litre Great motor. but mine is a manual so cannot help on G.Box piece.
Pulls like a train i have had a heavy caravan on the back and harly noticed it was there.
I get a good 33mpg as well. on a mixed run and i dont really hang around.

ask davemud, sure his 3litre was a slush box, twin axle 6 metre lunar to spain several times as i recall, think got same power train in his new patrol.
sharkie used to pull a 5.5 metre bessacarr with his auto mistral with 2.7 non intercooler no problem either.

I've seen quite a lot of discussion on camping and caravan forums regarding autos. The general concensus seems to be theyre fins providing the oil cooler is fitted.
The reason for my reading up (hangs head in shame) I was going to buy an auto transmission cherokee

i use to tow a alpine sprite with a mistral 2.7td(non intercooler)
this was auto box and had no problem if fact prfered it as long as your within tow weight shouldnt cause a problem
hi judoleigh
yes m8 towed my heavy lunar to Spain and back for 4 years, including up and down the Alps and pyrenees mountains,
the car had done 108000 miles when i sold it and it never missed a beet.
and yes is the same type of motor and box fitted to my 2007 patrol.....
The only thing my mechanic mate recommended we do was to change the Auto fluid before it was due so that was done at 50k
Then Only On very long climes up in the Midi pyrenees 1200ft up when the out side temp was 35deg the water temp would rise but it never over heated. We tested every thing and was put down to the oil cooler getting hot in front of the engine rad.
I would recommend one to any one, some early 3.0 had problems please read http://www.patrol4x4.com this will give you all the info on the 3.0 engine and auto box...
Hope this helps see you soon m8
