Suz and I went along to one of their meets tonight, with the idea of joining up. It was quite scary, the car park was full to overflowing with the green ovals, with just our T2, a X-trail, a Suzuki Vitara, a Jeep, and a 4x4 Mk2 Golf???

I never even knew they did a 4x4 golf!!!

Well, we are off for our induction on Monday, this should be interesting. I now have to take Suz for a guided tour of the underside of the car, so she can find all the towing points etc. I love woman in overalls:augie

Well whilst she is under the T2 give her a paint brush & the underseal:thumbs VW did a couple of 4WD Golf's R32 & GTI IIRC but it was just so they stopped on the tarmac better & they still get stuck on speed pumps:lol & no good as a Responce motor.
Your 1st Responce call out will prob be to recover all the LR's:naughty:naughty:naughty

Was in wessex 4x4 responce for a few years, they have so meany members i didnt get called out, well only 3 times.

I used to be in South East 4x4 Response when I had Snoopy and was living in Surrey. Wasn't all LR's back then - lots of us in Pajero's/Shoguns :D

Will eventually think about joining Hants & Berks when Smurf is a bit more equipped and I have the time to actually dedicate to helping people :o

When I did my induction I was the only Jap there :D
I also had a moan at the lecturer chappie as his whole shpeel was LR biased and even the tech side of stuff was pure LR theory. I suggested alternative and additional methods of vehicle control for non LR type trucks :rolleyes: His face was a picture , as if to say "there are other 4x4 s ? " :lol
I was more than happy to prove him totally wrong when we went offroad :thumbs

I have been watching these guys on Twitter for a while, and they seem to get a fair few shouts. It was a lot to take in last night, as obviously a lot of talk was about things people already knew about, so I was only hearing progress info, but it looks like they are sort of affiliated with the local councils, for things like Meals on Wheel, and high dependency home care, so seem to be pretty busy in bad weather, and they have teamed up with Raynet, and the local search and rescue as well.

Need to get my new AT tyres before the induction, don't want any embarrassing stops..:lol

Well, I passed all the training, tonight's was the last session, I am now on a 3 month probation period..

I have to say, that was the best report card of my life, I wish I had reports like that when I was at school.

Why probation?

Basically, they are a professional outfit now, and they are on the books for the local council, health authority, and police etc. They have their own PMR radio licence, and even the ability to drive on Green flashing lights, upon request, so want to make sure that they give out a professional look.

They have had issues in the past where some of the old members took their new found powers to their head, and got carried away, which was why they had so much trouble getting the police etc to take them seriously. So now they want you to do a bit of "sight seeing" with a person who has been doing it for a while, just to help you fill in the gaps, and see how they do things, but on real call outs.

It was actually quite scary to see first hand how someone can be driving a fully togged up 4x4, and still have no idea on the basics, like when they should be using 4 wheel drive, or how to recover from a stalled hill climb, or one who was scary how little he knew about what the winch on the front of the truck cold and should be used for (too much watching "The Fall Guy")...

The good news is, they run training as well, so I am booked in for my First aid course (my one ran out about 20 years ago), and a recovery course.

I already knew how to do it, as I got a free "Dirty Weekend" when I bought my Suzuki Vitara, that was taught by a 4x4 boot camp up near Wrexham. I think they were called 4x4 Safari, but it was a long time ago.

The hardest part was stalling the car in the first place....:lol:lol Those little Suzuki's are so light, they will climb a vertical wall if they could get traction.

The way I was taught was to keep foot on the brake, select reverse, and then let the car roll back, bump starting in reverse.

do not quite understand that, as to my mind now you have a velocity in the wrong direction that you have to overcome , maybe I missed something earlier in the thread? Rick

I was taught, foot on brake, clutch in and select reverse, off clutch, off brake, check all clear behind you and your wheels are straight, start ignition and guide her back down the slope... then try again :thumbs

That's the way I was instructed when doing our off road driving in the fire service, I was doing it in a Unimog.

With a Unimog, being so square and tall, I would have thought any hill climb or descent would be quite scary....:bow

I understand the idea is to stop any of the wheels from trying to lock up individually, which could cause the car to slip on one side, possibly causing it to twist round, and then roll over on the hill... basically, you are keeping the 4 wheels all connected together, and the engine is then controlling the speed of each wheel uniformly, the same as on a descent. The problem with relying on just the brakes, is they will vary from wheel to wheel, especially as you let them off, meaning you could have a point where one wheel is locked, and the other 3 are running free.

Superb off road machine, we have 4 mogs in our brigade, 3 pump ladders and 1 hose layer.
The hose layer is what we have in our station, which is better off road than the pump versions, I did try to get the pictures on here, but me and computers :nenau
If you go to Bucks fire and rescue, check pictures of our fleet and then go to Stokenchurch station.
Our mog has full tyre deflation which gives it great off road capability, but it's very tall and top heavy, so you just take your time :)
