as said new project started today, I know it is not 4 x 4 related but though people may like to know what goes on in the building trade, if it is of no interest then please say and I will drop it, if there is interest then I will post regular updates as the work progresses, this was at the start this morning, Rick

Is this the Solar power job you were talking about when I came down?

yes solar will be fitted when finished, yes demolition for now but new build starts soon, Rick

Hope that's not asbestos sheet being broken up there Rick. It'll be an interesting project to watch though.

yes it is "crysotile" been analysed, it is asbestos but not harmful, shame cos all asbestos gets labled the the same, cost over a grand to get rid of it in local land fill, load off money making bollocks, now if it was blue asbestos then it would have to be double bagged and all operatives would have to wear suites and breathing gear, but where do you find the type, ships boiler rooms and some government buildings heating systems, very rare, it is just another scam, Rick

solarman216
26-09-2013, 19:44
Day two, the base concrete turned out to be rubbish so it all has to come up,

solarman216
26-09-2013, 19:46
The block walls removed as well as the footings

solarman216
26-09-2013, 19:48
And it all ended up here to provide turning space for the 6 wheel concrete trucks, Rick

After 5 days on site we are now one day from our first concrete pour, 18 cubic meters, his is where it is going once the ladder section with the rag bolts have been secured into the trench, even got two layers reo in the bottom

solarman216
01-10-2013, 20:57
this is the steel to be fitted onto the rag bolts set in the concrete footings two on the trailer the other 12 in the distance, the angle is for reinforcing the wooden roof trusses, Rick

no machine for the main, hand for the pillar support bases, would you believe spec says C30 mix for pillar supports, C20 for the rest, year right :doh, and what happened last night? it pissed hard so had to remove reo and bottom out by hand this morning then set the supports for the rag bolts as per pics

solarman216
02-10-2013, 20:55
with more rain for cast, managed to pull the concrete forward to 2 pm today, but not smooth, we have access problems here and having ordered 18 cubic mtrs expected 3 x 6 wheel 6 mtr trucks, so what arrives first? an 8 legger wide spread on the front bogie and crying 8 mts so no way was he coming in, so poor old 3 ton dumper had to track it all the 500 mtrs each way, on top of that driver got lost, despite the fact I supplied a map of exact access to the office but none of the three drivers had a copy:doh, anyway got it all in

solarman216
02-10-2013, 21:05
by the time we cleared up it was 7 pm before I left and started at 7 am, do not want many days like this, absolutely shattered now, well into some relaxing scotch, and I must say the lads worked beyond the call of duty to finish it, but the thought of more rain in the footings and all the problems that can cause spurred us on, this is the second side with the precisely located stanchion mounts, just hope they did not move, we did monitor it closely while pouring and did not see any movement, will find out for sure tomorrow but not early for me as I need a rest, Rick

Wishing you the best of luck with this project.

Keep the pics coming an do post up mail order details if it can be done by the case rather than cask!

When I have done this type of stuff on site, building pile caps etc, we used to put cardboard cones on the bolts. One day I had to go back to site on a Christmas morning to strike them all.

Would this system not have worked for your?

Any decent mail order outlets for your beer?

Saw the owner today, seems it is a Licensing issue, he has to sell only to Licensed premises, in order to sell to the public he would need another Licence and he faces all sorts of restrictions re age of purchaser and time of sale etc, just too complicated, that is why he only bottles a sample of each batch to give to his buyers to test, Rick

solarman216
04-10-2013, 20:45
despite a bit of rain early on we got 8 of the steel stanchions up today, the other six will have to wait till we demolish the rest of the old building, ended up being only 5 mm max out on alignment that is over a 12 mtr run so not bad, so well pleased at the end of the day, also got the services trench finished and services laid, around 80 meters long, no pics of that thou

solarman216
04-10-2013, 20:47
also had delivery of blocks and sand, sand out of view, Rick

briggie
10-10-2013, 22:45
hows it going rick ?

solarman216
14-10-2013, 23:46
This is how it stands today 14 th October, poured 39 cubic mtrs concrete, erected 14 stanchions and fitted 7 original trusses (to appease the planners) started gable end wall and shifted feck loads of mud that came in after the rain, Rick

briggie
16-10-2013, 19:58
hope the site is ok mate after all the rain today

solarman216
16-10-2013, 20:20
Funny you should say that Pete, the team clocked off at 1 pm while I was collecting materials, when I got back this was the what I saw, you can see the water in the trench, but both gable walls are up so stud work can start as soon as timber arrives on Friday, all 1000 mtrs of it, in the mean time we do have the timber for the rest of the purlins and ply for strengthening the trusses, then when the rest of the scaffold is up we can fit the roof and get at least some cover, think this is the biggest shed I have ever errected, but not the most expencive job by far, Rick

solarman216
16-10-2013, 20:26
I made a big sucker pump this afternoon to cope with the water in the trenches, consists of a waterbut hooked into a wet vac, will show pics tomorrow, should be interesting, Rick

briggie
17-10-2013, 19:26
wonder how long it took to pump all that water out ?

solarman216
17-10-2013, 21:18
The deep water is easy, centre trench had 4 inches, submersible pump pulled that out in 20 minutes the problem is the last half inch, traditionally it was scooped out with a shovel into a bucket, surprising how much you can shift like that but it still leaves a residue that needs sponging up, specially as in our case it has bought the clay down onto the concrete, well this machine is ace, sucks it all up leaving almost dry concrete, the centre trench in the last pic after the submersible had done its job the vac cleaned it all up and only just over half filled the blue barrel, well pleased with an hours work knocking it up the evening before, it sucked up everything mud stones literally anything that would go up the 2.5 inch hose, Rick

17-10-2013, 21:48
love this thread rick..
I love watching stuff comin together.
got my own projects on with a mini version of your footings.
and a mini brewery.
Ive only got 80 bottles of wine in stock. 30 damson on the go.6apple and fig,6 elderberrie,6 plum. 40 pints of dark ale 40 pints of light ale.
oh I got rid of the still as I could knock tons of spirits out realy quickly.but was drinkin it all:D

solarman216
23-10-2013, 22:01
Well we are one month into the project, this is how we stand today one month and 1 day later, the rain and wind have slowed us down a lot but still have managed to get about a third of the roof sections up, no easy task with the wind, 1 meter wide by 3.5 meter long, also laid several courses of laid flat blocks on the centre wall that will support the middle of the block beams for the floor, hope I am not boring you, please say if I am, Rick

briggie
24-10-2013, 06:55
looking good mate :thumb2..... can imagine what it was like trying to move the roof panels in the wind and rain ....... well done so far :clap:clap:clap

Keep it coming its interesting to see what's going on!

solarman216
26-10-2013, 20:14
This is were we were last thing Friday, got storms coming Sunday night/Monday morning, will have to see what happens the roof sheets I suspect are the most vulnerable as limited number of screws holding them on so might put some ratchet straps at both ends tomorrow, Rick

solarman216
26-10-2013, 20:17
the first pic shows blocks all bumped out for the bricky on Monday, if he cannot do the outside walls due to rain then he can do the centre one, Rick

briggie
28-10-2013, 18:05
how did you get on today with all the wind / rain ?

solarman216
29-10-2013, 21:10
not had a phone or internet signal till now since the storm, I lost 3 solar tubes thats about all, at the site just pumped the water out and carried on, got the rear wall up halfway and started the front, and got stud work up on the 2nd gable end, so not bad, although I am connected I have no bars up at all, so expecting it to go off any time, Rick

solarman216
02-11-2013, 00:24
This is how we stand 6 weeks into the job, considering the weather that has slowed us down not bad, last week we spent overall 1 plus days just pumping out, but that is over now as block work all round is above ground level, all roof sheets on, both end gable studs done almost all rear stud work done, Monday sees over site levelled and Tuesday another 6 mtr concrete as over site blinding as well as continue with internal block work Wednesday tacking OSB board to existing studs, and finish internal block work, Thursday tracking in 60 concrete beams at 200 kg each for the floor, Friday finish floor? well all this is hopes, but have done well so far at the half way point time wise, Rick

solarman216
02-11-2013, 00:26
Windows and doors coming end next week, Rick

solarman216
05-11-2013, 21:04
Monday 4th ready for over site, this is purely to stop vegetation growth and burrowing animals, but ouch at a day levelling and filling in voids etc plus over £900 for concrete

solarman216
05-11-2013, 21:07
this is how much water washes down during the recent rain, caused this wash out, you can see it all spread over the field

solarman216
05-11-2013, 21:18
concrete in all 8 cube of it, we had a dumper in there running it to the end etc but it was still hard work as it starts to stiffen up after a very short time

solarman216
05-11-2013, 21:23
Dave went and got the 2 tonne dumper stuck in the mire, tried straight pull from the made up road but nothing, so off to get my blocks and rope,

solarman216
05-11-2013, 21:31
So used 3 blocks one on first gate post, next on dumper, then back up to anchored 4 x 4 with brakes applied and resting on 2nd gate post then back to 2nd point on dumper, no winch just pulling on road in 4 wheel, came out a dream, was very wary of damaging the posts but only items to anchor to

solarman216
05-11-2013, 21:43

When I worked as a bricklayer (many years ago) the dumpers back then used to just plough through mega deep mud and up incredible hills, never got them stuck.
They don't make them like they used to :lol

he did sink it into a newly filled trench and with all the rain it was all soft, but main point is he only had to wait 2 mins for the concrete truck to go and he could of just gone up the made up road:doh, Rick

solarman216
15-11-2013, 21:10
Sorry it has been a while but not so much to photograph now, anyway had 12 tonnes of floor beams delivered but truck was too big to get up drive so dropped them on the drive and then had to find a way of moving them

solarman216
15-11-2013, 21:12
So JCB came to our aid, 1.4 tonnes at a time

solarman216
15-11-2013, 21:14
12 tonnes of beams ready for placing on Monday

solarman216
15-11-2013, 21:23
view of inside the building, the beams will sit from centre wall to both sides, you can see on the Right the access we have left for the 2 tonne digger that will place them, then the space between the beams will be filled with concrete blocks, gonna be a good day on Monday, the three sides of the building are ready battened to receive the Cedral weather board that we have found can be fixed with a Paslode nail gun with SS nails all 3000 of them, pics of that latter, Rick

solarman216
18-11-2013, 22:13
Maybe I did but gonna blame the supplier (not fair really) did I say 60 concrete beams :doh no should have been 120, only good part is customer initially thought he was going to have to fork out another 4k for the rest, but turns out that the quote was for 120 and only billed half for the 60 we had, so only damage is a time delay, and we have plenty to keep us going for the week delay the beams will cost, :thumbs , Rick

Lazy-Ferret
18-11-2013, 22:22
Blame it on the mud, you had to cover over your toes with wellies, so had a limit on how high you could count...:lol

briggie
18-11-2013, 22:35
looking good rick ...... how long before the first pint is brewed ? :naughty

solarman216
18-11-2013, 22:39
Yep we have had plenty of mud, and it is hard to think when trying to keep your balance and stay upright, in reality I have had so many numbers going round in my head when the sales guy asked how many I said 60 but, he should have checked his quote, but I hold no grudge as he has done me a grand job on pricing for the whole job, and all the staff are bending over backwards to help, like today collected a pallet of blocks 1.5 tonnes we have been loading them on my car trailer at the rear then pushing them forward over the axles, today had a different pallet, would not slide, pallet started to buckle, lorry driver straight away said back it over to my truck and will lift it with the grab, excellent service, Rick

solarman216
18-11-2013, 22:41
looking good rick ...... how long before the first pint is brewed ? :naughty

well into next year I think, we will be done but jobs for others will take a little longer I think, Rick

solarman216
19-11-2013, 19:31
this is the first 60 beams with most of the blocks in the beams came in at 12 tonnes with about 5 tonnes blocks

solarman216
19-11-2013, 19:36
from the front of the building, almost all the stud work done will be starting the OSB boarding and battens tomorrow, the other 60 beams should be with us around Tuesday next week, we have the 3 doors and seven windows to fit as well, but overall job going very well, Wednesday will be 8 weeks on the job and priced it for 12, Rick

solarman216
21-11-2013, 21:18
as we stand today, rained a large part of the day and as there is no guttering fitted as yet, the roof discharges onto the scaffold and then onto us, but still got a good deal done

solarman216
21-11-2013, 21:27
another view of the beams so far installed, got another 64 coming early next week, why 64? well the drawing guy got it wrong and the spacings did not work between the steel stanchions, so we had to cut blocks to "makeitfit" hence the need for 2 more beams per side, but by god will I be pleased when this is done getting up early is not only doing me in but it has smashed my love life, Rick

Lazy-Ferret
21-11-2013, 22:43

I envy you mate.
I love making stuff whatever it may be. I recently had 30 square meters of decking given to me that I was going to use as winter fuel.
There isn't much left as ive made so much stuff with it.
my job is boring cleaning windows but it pays the bills.

I love seeing stuff come together and having job satisfaction.
I do my job and have to do the same thing over next month....

however the plus side to my job is I can switch off from it at night rather than planning the next stage tomorrow.

im enjoying watchin this come together mate and maybe one day I will get to sample the delights:D

I do have to say it has been very hard work, very rewarding but nonetheless very hard, with a wage bill of over £3k per week I had to be on the ball, not easy when I have been semi retired for over 6 years, but we got there and I also have to praise my workers, they have done everything I asked even in bad conditions, and we have come out within contract time, so I will be giving them a bonus out of my own pocket, Rick

Yes mate I am, more so because it came out well within time and also within budget, had thought this was the last large job I would do as I am supposed to be retired but another customer has just told me he is purchasing a derelict restaurant, and guess who has the job of refurbishing it? kitchen for a start is to be moved complete from middle of shop to the far end with all the plumbing etc that that will involve, plus extractors and drainage where there is none, but got to switch off now till the new year, Rick
