View Full Version : Towbar?

I purchased a second hand towbar for our WD21 R3M Terrano, and put it to one side, to clean it up and fit it when I got a chance.

I got it out last week to fit, and it will not line up with any mounting points on the WD21.

My question is, anyone know what it might be for, it says "L reg Nissan Terrano" painted in yellow paint on it. It only has 2, rather than 3 fixing holes, and looks to be slightly wider.

Anyone know if the L reg Terrano would be any different to any of the others, and is L, an R20, or a WD21? could it be for a Terrano van?

looks similar to the one on my 2002 R20.
It measures 925mm W overall.

This one is 955mm wide.

You can see my bent R20 one beside it which is 925mm, it has 3 holes instead of 2, and they are a very different pattern.

no, sorry mounting plates are the wrong way round, but every T2 I have ever had, has had the same tow bar mounting points Td and TDI, LWB and SWB, Commercial and car :thumb2

I'll have a look to see if it is a front push bar, but I would have thought the actual ball would be mounted to one side rather than in the middle. Not sure I would want that monster stuck to the front end though.

When I was looking for a towbar for the R20, there were 2 different ones, one that fitted both the LWB and SWB, and a second cheaper one that fitted the T2 Vans... I could not see what the difference was, but all the towbar manufacturer's seem to list them as different parts.

Mine is similar vintage to an L reg and the towbar on mine isn't like that either - could it be for a Terrano I not Terrano II?, or am I being blond - is that what a R3M is!

All the terrano 2 towbars are the same the one in your pic looks homemade.wouldnt trust it even if it did fit.Quality of the towbars varies when i post them some are only 50mm box and weigh very little the genuine bars are about 80mm thick wall box and are around 20kg i think

We have 2 Terrano's, a WD21, what I call the T1, which has R3M on the back, and a normal R20,what we all call the T2. I got that one for the T1, but it does not fit.

Build wise the picture does not do it justice, those side plates are 12mm thick, and it is very heavy. I can only just hold it up one handed when I was offering it up to the car. It is covered in waxoil, which is why I wanted to clean it up before fitting, but now I will have to do it to see if there are any markings or clues.

Has to have a plate on it for type approval after 1998 if it doesnt then you shouldnt fit it on vehicle manufactured after 1st august 1998

It was supposedly off an "L" reg T1, which is 93, so might not have a plate, and was going on an "H" 1991 T1, so the plate would not be applicable. Would be nice if there was one though, just to cure my curiosity.

I just wondered if anyone could say what Nissan it was from, but it looks like it really is for totally the wrong car.

CNC Fabs is correct. The van type does not need type approval (so can be cheaper - no testing), I believe it is not required for pick ups either.

I have fitted bars to 2.7i, 2.7 TDi and 3.0 they are all the same.

Thanks... well the new Witter one for my T2 should arrive today, I will offer it up to the T1 before I fit it, and see if it will fit that as well...

Why do the Vans not need the approval?

Well, the T2 towbar definitely does not fit the T1, in fact, the more I look, the less obvious it is how one would fit to the T1 as I can't find any fixing holes at all.
