If you can tell us what age, model ie TD or TDI it'll help alot  If it's a later TDI (with intercooler) then I would think there is a high chance your MAF unit is on it's way out

Easy way to tell if yours is the intercooler TDI is the bonnet will have a big air intake in the middle of it.
If it is the older TD then check the workshops in the download section for the mini fuel filter.
If you have the TDI version then some of them do have a mini filter but like has been mentioned try the MAF sensor. Again there is a workshop regarding the MAF. I and others have cleaned the MAF sensor, dead easy to do you just need a can of contact cleaner.
Both these subjects have previous postings so it may be worth having a search through. It's worth checking that both the main fuel and air filters have been serviced recently too.

I don't use mine for towing but alot of members do & pull much bigger caravans than yours with no probles  As JT has just said have a search through some of the old threads & you'll find the answers  I would have a look in the download section & do the voltage check on the MAF unit, mine was only reading .2v below what it should have but after fitting a new maf £45 from nissan I have'nt stopped smiling since as it's now like a hot hatch :P
thanks for all replys great club will get maf changed and reply again thanks again

I would give it a clean 1st & check the voltage readings as it may not need to be replaced at the min  the price I quoted was for the Bosch maf unit, the Hitatchi one cost alot more

HI dray
Just a thought but did you change down in plenty of time as these engines perform best when turbo on full boost which is between 2,250 and 3,000 rpm.with mine if i let it drop down the revs it just wont pull .

Before you spend any money, disconnect MAF to see if there is any difference in car, eg no change them MAF is U/S.
forget cleaning it 8O If it is bosch its not expensive.

so what would be the fault of a mistral poor towing then i have checked the mini filter
someone has removed it so no probs there and regularly serviced with all filter changes
thanks lee
I tow a 2berth caravan, never get out of 5th gear on the motorway, with 25/26mpg. I have the hitachi maf which is easily cleaned. Just unplug take out screws and it pulls out of its 'O' ring mount. I carefully use a cotton bud wet with alcohol to wipe the two elements, takes no more than 10 mins.......

is the turbo oil seal in good order.mine has gone on the tdi causing a flat spot at around 2000 rpm and just no guts at all when driving.
